How about everyone lists where they went, their general ideas about their school and their major(s). Also how about their current career title or what they plan to be doing.

I goto Algonquin College in Ottawa...for my program (Graphic Design) it is the 2nd best in the country (Canada) so that's pretty cool. I went in there with the idiotic mentality that I wouldn't learn much, but damn, now I'm an expert in Quark/Illustrator where I only knew photoshop...and I've learned invaluable information on print. I used to never do print, now I'm not scared to tackle it, and I actually do well in it. Fantastic school program they have, if anyone in the area wanted to check it out. (or "oot" as we canadians say).
Heck, I'm only done my first year, I'm sure I have a lot to learn in the following two.

I went to sva School of Visual arts(read my rant in the post "humbled").
Good
-Great location, New York CIty
-Some really great teachers
-Decent finacial aid
-good career office
-good animation program
Bad
-No campus
-awful First year classes
-awful "dorms"
-Expensive
-Traditionals are not stressed enough
Anyways I graduated last year been doing freelance character/concept design for the past year. Laters.

So if Algonquin is the second best, would the Bachelor or Design program shared between Sherridan and York University be the best in Canada. |

Doc: I don't know how much has changed since you've graduated.. but I gotta say, the Jersey City housing is great. If anyone is considering SVA--DO NOT CONSIDER THEIR MANHATTAN HOUSING. I know it sounds bad to be placed in Jersey--but the commute is great.. only 20 minutes max from most classes, cheap.. and puts you in a much "homier" envirement IMO.
Doc: I just read your rant about SVA and--having just finished my first year there I completely agree with you. The school does have a lot to promise though--and from what I've experienced through my friends and accosiates especially for those interested in Computer Art and Illustration.
If anyone here is thinking about SVA--I'd recomend giving it a shot.. it's a nice place, with a lot to teach you.. the first year classes will make it seem like total bullshit--but that's something that unfortunatly you'll deal with at a lot of art colleges..
Dispite these drawbacks.. I don't think that anyone entering SVA should feel like they've made a mistake.. it can end up treating you very very well.
Grift^
Just my two cents....

I didn't go to school, but if I had I would like to have gone to either Ringling Brothers School of Art in Sarasota, FL or Joe Kubert's School of Art.
Info on Kubert's http://www.kubertsworld.com/

I go to school in bowling greeen, OH at (shockingly) Bowling Green State University. The computer art and animation program here is great ( in the top 3 in the US)...the art program is nice too, not as powerful in some areas, but it is strong in drawing and computer art (where i am at ). i have checked, and there isnt an illustration program, but isnt that drawing? thats what i always thought...hmm. their web site is http://art.bgsu.edu . check it out!!
plus, the male to female ratio here is like 1:15 or something. just an added bonus i guess.

Hi
Sorry to bring this old topic back up (I hope nobody minds?), but Doc Holliday and Grift were discussing School of Visual Arts (SVA, NY) and I plan on attending within two years
I hear they have a good program for Computer Art but are weak on foundation/traditionals.. I'm wondering if anyone that attended SVA could clarify.. I would love to major in Computer Art but be more than a mouse-pusher....
Thanks,
JJ

I was accepted to CCAC (California College of Arts & Crafts) based on my high school AP portfolio. Sadly I could not go because my family had no money. Even if I took out numerous loans I would have fallen short on tuition. So that sucked...but hey...at least I don't have to spend the rest of my life paying for it. Just ended up at community colleges taking whatever classes I could. No matter where you DO or DON'T go...if you have the desire and patience you can reach your goals. |
