Haha! Santa claws going for some serious christmess...
No crits except push the rest towards the detail level of the face. I like this kind of humor. Beautifully done, BTW. |

wow.
i'm really flattered on the amount of replies. too many kind words. thanks guys! i guess you just made my christmas (yeah, i worked extra hard to get this finished too. that's also the explanation for the delayed reply )
here's some personal replies.
eetu: thans! great that someone noticed the blood! yes i liked the red but it got changed a bit in the final...
rag: thanks! but i have to disappoint you that i didn't increase the size of canvas... as strange as it may sound i like it that way better... does anyone have comments on this? i really would like to hear what others think of this.
skagge: thanks! painter.
boomstick: thanks! i'm waiting for you card now.
jerry: sorry
to all others i can just say: thanks a lot!
hopefully you like this final version too(tried to use your advice as best as i could). so without further ado, here goes:
now that this is finished i'd love to hear you comments on what went wrong and what right. (should i start a new thread or does someone really check the old messages?)

Pretty slick. Nice balance between abstract and realistic rendering. |

i like what you did with the bag. but, i still like the un-finished version more. something about it.. the wild variety of refinement maybe. giant slabs of color and spontanious strokes mixed together. my eyes rest easier on it. they completed one is very good too, though! |

Thats just friggin amazing! I love the red nose and everything its so perfect. The faces in the bag are the best! Hrmm... there are some things about the first version you posted that i like over the final, for some reason santa's lip in the final, looks a little off...but santa's lip in the previous version looks perfect... i think its that little bit of highlight on the left side of hte lip that was in the previous version that isnt really there in the final. thats all i can think of... the texture on the bag is just shy of being godlike.

Pretty nice - a couple notes.
1)He needs something hanging from his lip-it's down as though something's there, like a cigarette.
2)His front leg is off. Try bringing the pants shearing back toward the crotch as you reach the upper half of the thigh. Remember that even when you distort anatomy, the anatomy is still there.
3)Do something with the bag texture. It's too anonymous. Try really making it look like faces that are on the inside of a bag pushing out, instead of faces that are sort of sliding into being a bag.
4)His ear's out of perspective
5)Is that a bear paw on his right arm?
Looks good Janne, welcome to paradise.

i love this picture. i've made it the background for my home pc to add a little xmass cheer to my livingroom.
now for the part that going to make you hate me.... i kinda like some parts of the original picture better. especially the swarthy angle of his cap and his pudgier build. the new abdomen area forms a pretty straight line with his foremost leg which is a bit distracting. also the further definition of his right hand has me confused as to what its supposed to be doing/look like structure.
as to the parts i like better, i love the addition of his hat's pom-pom, the new rendering of the bag and the clarification of his legs.
fantastic. keep posting more. its very refreshing too see your slightly off kilter stuff. |

thanks all!
phreaknasty: thanks! and you shouldn't be shy to make crits. there would be no point for me to post these if couldn't get some constructive comments too. i agree with you about the comments made... it's usual prob at least for me that in the end original skectch has better parts. usually it's only the artist though who notices the flaws under all the polish.
Icannon: i have had same feelings as you. as i already pointed out there is some parts i too like better in the original. it's a shame when part of "that something" gets lost in the process...
MaLoRuM: thanks. hehe, actually i was pointed out earlier that lips in the original skectch looked off and i tried to fix them... now i see that it was a complete failure
Anthony: thought about that cigarette idea myself but decided against it because it's pretty used already
leg is off i agree. even though i know something about anatomy already, portraying movement is hard to achieve.
bag was the hardest thing to make in this image... i agree that it's not quite there yet but i have ran out of ideas what to do with it.
right arm is bit messed too. it's not supposed to be a paw.
thanks for your comments. much appreciated.

I am in love with this piece. I thought the first version was abolutely amazing and then you go and make it even cooler, how the hell do you do that? I have to agree, I think the faces in the bag are VERY VERY badass. Awesome work.

Janne: Awesome picture! Now I've got the terror of having nightmares about Santa tonight!
Your style reminds me the one of a French artist that was active in the demo scene a few years ago.. I can't remember his name tough..
