You certainly do have the start of a very interesting image. I just think that the style is a little bit too contrasting at the moment. You have a nice glossy chess board but the hand and the chess piece are a little on the dull side. Maybe the fingernails should be a little bit more glossy to match the board.

At the moment, the position that the arm is in doesn't look 100% correct. You don't seem to be able to get a feel for the bit of arm right behind the hand. You can see the sleeve but the hand itself looks to be too high up. The sleeve itself could possibly do with a bit of work with the 'folds' on the clothes. At the moment they don't look deep enough or look like they flow properly.

The other thing I'd suggest that would give the image a bit more feel of being complete you be putting a shadow or reflection on the chess board. At the moment it appears that you have 2 different elements that don't interact properly because the style is too different.

Just a couple of ideas

Yah, i agree with matt on this one. You need a bit of reflection on the chessboard. Perhaps a reflection of the chess piece and hand onto it, so it gives us afeeling of depth. Also, your chess piece looks like its made out of plastic, and if so, should have more extreme highlights. I think one thing that might help is darkening the sahdows in this picture, because there is lack of contrast. And also, the chessboard looks like some kind of filter or pregenerated, so might be better off if you just painted in a board

Another thing you might consider is putting some pieces onto the chessboard

Take off your clothes. It's OK - I'm an artist.

I will be changing the board. It's just two textures I used, and about 2 minutes after I whacked them down, I thought "Nah!", so that'll definately be changed.

I used a reference pic of myself for the pose, but have tweaked it since then... Shall look at fixing it somehow. I'll add some more contrasting shadows, thanks for pointing that out. And Shadows and/or reflections will be put on, as will other chess pieces. It's work in progress, remember? @;-)

Thanks ppls. Shall edit and re-upload soonish.

i think the problem with the chessboard texture is that it's 'standing up' ..
i.e. it's not in perspective.
