This is a thumbnail sketch for a homework assignment in my life drawing class. we are to draw ourselves as an animal and then put that figure in an environment.

I would really like to know if this works or not. please let me know.

So which animal are you? Really like it. Cept I see some really ugly white lines here and there. What might get you better points is maybe changing the atmosphere.... perhaps draw yourself in a school environemtn. Because, right now i don't se ehow the floating islands is relevant to it... but hey... could be a whole story that i dont know. Really like it, the black and white effects..but definitely get that blue junk off mr. racoon...its either that or color the pic.

thanks for your comments guys. the blue on that little guy is from the blue pencil that I originally sketched it in. The finished version will be about 28x17 inches in charcole.

Does anybody else have suggestions? my concerns are the composition, and the value range. And I'm not quite sure how to make the city look like it's far away.

You could add atmospheric perspective. Just make the island a bit smaller and use lighter values, the fainter the values..the farther away it will appear.

Here is what I played with a little. Hope it shows atmospheric perspective a bit.

Can't move it like that... messes up the composition. A bit of lightening as it recedes into the distance wouldn't hurt, though.

I agree the composition is shot in that one, but it does look farther away.
