This is a work in progress, still no real textures, lighting, or even a background...yet. I've been trying to get time in on it during lunch breaks at work and a few evenings here or there. It was built with meshsmooth in MAX3.1

Nice work.
The car looks a little like one of the newer BMW models. I like the spoiler and the wheel hubs, very sporty. Nice curves to.

Thanks for the compliments,

Its based on the BMW Z3 M Coupe, I'm trying to make it look like a modified GT racer or Super Touring version.

COOL.
How did you model. It looks like you could have used surface tools.

BTW, I dunno exactly what you mean by "modeled with meshsmooth". You could have used many modeling methods and then applied mesh smooth.

No surface tools, just regular low poly modeling with a meshsmooth thrown on top to rez it up. Some parts started with a line extruded others were from a box and pulling pushing the verts...I have some very early step by step images and notes at:
http://www.pixeltwisters.com/natec/m%20coupe/index.html

I hope to update this more, but I've been fairly busy at work.

Jenn:
Thanks! It'd cost quite a bit! , I had the brochure of the stock car from the dealer, which has a nice blueprint in it, tons of magazines and a 1/18th scale model. Then I just started modifing it based on what I liked about other cars.

Nex:
Thanks, but its really just basic materials right now, I hoping to get some tips from the texture folks here at presto (hint, hint)when I actually start to make the decals, dirt, scratches, dents, etc.

Francis:
Yeah, I did trace a photo/blueprint to start...how'd you know?

Where are the brakes? How about seats and that junk. Is there oil made with realFlow inside the engine.

awesome job! I love modeling cars too. I never quite happy with my results. Practic I suppose. the method for modeling doesn't look very easy to me. I use rhino and make concept designs using different surface tools.

Cool later

There are brakes in the front, haven't copied them to the rear, still building the seats...no engine, much less oil.

I think by using the low poly method you can build up the large shapes really quickly and easy to add detail where you want it. Especially on tight edges where the body panels meet.

Hey natec, that style/technique looks really good, but....that car yuck :P I like your materials you have so far on it, and the glass looks good but i hate that car lol. But that's my oppinion. Anyways, are you sure it's that low to the ground? i mean it looks like it has ground effects or something but that back end still looks REALLY friggin low to the ground. I would say it looks riced up but...it's a BMW

BMW Z3 Coupe? Anybody could model a smooth curvy car like that. Let's see ya make a nice boxy 81 Ford Fairmont 4 Door (Drab green government issue no less). Then I'll throw some respect to ya .

OK,ok,ok...I know...alot of people don't like that car, but that was the point, cause I've seen most all cars done already. Then I wanted to make it even a little more different.

It is too low right now, I'll raise it a bit, the super touring cars are almost that low though...

Hmmm... 81 Fairmont?? Yeah, that'll be my next project right after I finish the Pink Mary K car I've been working on

Cool!! You gonna put Mary K's festering corpse in there (she still looks good in makeup, even after all these years). That would be Rad .

Hey, that's a very cool model, m8! I like it.

One backdraw: that's the ugliest BMW there is: Z3 Coupe with oversized spoiler.
Anyway, seen the latest model? BMW Z9. Now that's a mean machine!

Hey.. very pretty. I'm doing this "Build Your Dream Vehicle" contest sponsored by Daimler-Chrysler.. and I am in charge of making the 3d model, animations, Commercials, magazine ads, and a behind-the-scenes movie. Very Fun. Right now I am debating between using 3dsmax and rhinoceros3d to model... Rhino is supposedly MUCH better with the whole NURBS thing. But I can ASSURE you that i could NEVER do what you just did with Rhino. Does 3dsmax smooth it out for you? (with the whole mesh smooth or whatever) Do you have any suggestions? thanks a ton (BTW, animating in Bryce. That's a good idea right?)

-matt

PS this question for anyone....

Paqmann:

I tried Rhino a long time ago and didn't like it much, I've seen impressive results, but I just like MAX better. With MAX's meshsmooth you can rez up only the areas you want, by the density of your low-poly control mesh...does that make any sense?

I'll post some wireframes, before and after smoothing if somebody wants to see them...

I sure hope your joking bout bryce...

Drorak:
Thanks, I guess you mean Myst3...spring 2001 I believe...

I don't have any other blueprints really, but you can find them in some of the brochures or this site:

thanks dhabih

Paqmann:
In your previous message you mentioned choosing between MAX and Rhino to model. So if you had access to MAX to model then I would also use that to animate. I haven't used Bryce in a looonnnggg time, so maybe I'm wrong, but its not much good for anything more than landscape stills. I started with Truespace, which used to be really cheap. Check out Hash Animation Master, I think its still around $100 and there have been some great things done with it.
