I have the opportunity to get a new processor for my PC.
the system's pretty respectable right now
Pentium III, 128mb RAM, 12.6gig HD (too small ) with good video and sound cards, but I'm going to get a new processor soon.
the thing is, I'm not sure whether to get a 933mhz P3 and let my stepdad pay for the whole thing as he has offered, or buy a new motherboard myself and he'll buy a NICE P4, perhaps 1.4ghz or higher.
is it worth the money? a very fast processor would be very nice.
oh yeah, and getting a whole new computer doesn't seem to be an option, so lets have none of you mac lovers telling me to get one with a G4.
thanks for any help

I would go for the second option. 500 extra MHz is worth the motherboard money to me. Plus, it will be a nicer one anyway, and you probably will be able to get faster RAM and all the stuff that goes along with op of the line MoBos. |

Just for laughs.. http://koti.mbnet.fi/~tejo/pics/Testit/1260mhz/sandra_multi.jpg
[email protected]/PC133 ($50 chip) beats P4 1.5GHz ($700 chip).
Compare the cost of those hi-end systems..
AMD System
Thunderbird 1.2GHz - $265
Motherboard - $80
DDR RAM 256MB - $130
Total: $475
Intel System
P4 1.5GHz - $720
Motherboard - $220
RDRAM 256MB - $410
Total: $1350
Performance? About the same. IMO Intel is just another money hungry giant like MS that doesn't care to do better for the customer. Instead trying to keep up technologically while trying to get the biggest chunk off peoples money.

Ben Barker: thanks a lot. I think I will go for the P4 actually if I can't get a whole new computer, which now actually seems to be an option... but no macs still.
strata: hmm... well I'm never gonna be a manwhore, unless I get a sexchange operation of course, but I don't think my boyfriend would like that much.
Freddio: My thinking too.
Bradford: Yeah
[Shizo]: It's better than a P3, which is what I have now. crappy as THAT is... although that AMD comparision sounds intriguing... I'll discuss it with the money. |

Fuck all that Intel shit, AMD is where it's at, nigga.
I Picked up a Duron 800 for $80.00 and the performance is amazing.
My understanding of the P4 is that a lot of the software is going to have to be rewritten to get the real speed advantage.
Intel is where IBM was at in the 80's. Big and arrogant and about to get their clocks cleaned, IMO.

Periadam.. no no no no and again NO.
P4 is in no way faster than PIII. On a side note there is no PIII 1GHz.. Even if you do manage to find a place to buy it, it's damn unstable.
In some benchmarks P4 is slower than PIII 933. In one benchmark i remember (only one) P4 is faster is QuakeIII arena that uses intel's SSE. NOT in Photoshop.
Also my friend went to Short Circuit City where there was P4 compy.. and he said it crashed on him LOL
Anyways. As i stated before - anyone who wants Intel nowdays needs his head checked. It's almost as bad as wanting a MAC.. hehe

well ok, [Shizo]... you definitely know more than I do. although I sincerely doubt I could convince the money to buy a Thunderbird... again, I'll ask about it
