I heard someone commenting about a person's art, and that person said there was too much "dodge and burn", or something like that. I also, read something like this in Dhabih's tutorial section. What's this dodge and burn? I can see it on the layer option thingy. Is this what you peeps are referring to?

There's also a dodge and burn tool in photoshop which works in much the same way the paintbrush tool does, except that it brightens or darkens the areas of an image you use it on. It's the brush that looks like a pushpin (circle on top, line coming out of it). In photoshop five, it's located direcly below the pencil tool. Not sure where they put it in six, since I don't have that installed here.

Generally speaking, it's a good tool to use to learn some of the basics of light-vs-dark contrast. It's also good for texture work. Once you progress far enough, though, it's generally better to lay out your lights and darks with brush strokes. You learn more that way.

Which is why you'll often see people saying "lighten up on the dodge/burn. Use the paintbrush instead."

Still, it's worth playing around with. Dhabih's tutorial uses it, I believe, so it's not like talented artists avoid it entirely (although his recent stuff seems to moving toward more Mullins-esque brushwork, although certainly in his own style).

Cheers,

its a tool in the toolbar, dodgeis used for highlighting(increasing value) and burn for shading(decreasing value),they are actually photoretouching tools but are used by artists for creating form generaly and in the options paltette you set wether the tool affects the highlights ,midtones or shadows.it can be a tricky tool to depend on because it affects the colors and as I said can only be segregated to one of three values.the better alternative is to create a layer and do your shading, highlighting with the airbrush.for highlights set the layer to overlay and than for shading set it to multiply.

re: I can see it on the layer option thingy. Is this what you peeps are referring to?

dodge/burn/sponge is over there on your toolbox, it looks like a lollipop, a hand o a sponge.. or hit 'O' on the keyboard, it'll select it.

as for brushes, here's what they do:

Jesus, Faust, did I send you that?

wtf was I thinking?

I lurk here. Don't post too much, but I read virtually everything. Though actually, I'm posting a piece tonight that I need help with. First time I've sat down and drawn anything more than quick doodles in years.
