Ok guys I'm scared to death to post here, but I figure I'll only get worse (if that's possible) without help. I wanted a painful-looking pose, the face and hand are the only things semi-completed, the hair was the last thing I threw in, so it's a mess. Please ignore the awful background. Now, I have been a traditional artist for a long time, and was fairly sucessful. This is my first pure digital piece. Would it be wisest for me to sketch on paper then scan and draw?

Thanks in advace, even for the rips

She looks more unconscious than in pain. I'm not a mermaid expert but the way you shaded her tail it looks as though she has legs and is just wearing a mermaid outfit. I prefer to sketch on paper first and scan in. I don't have the wacom+hand+eye coordination down to sketch correctly. I've only seen a few people who can pull it off. Francis comes to mind (whether he knows it or not). The overall figure is not that bad considering you drew straight in.

It is a very good start.. nothing to be afraid of.

I'd suggest looking at fish instead of mermaid pics. Examine the anatomy. Who is to say what a mermaid really looks like. Get creative with it!

Hey Irulann,
I'm not a digital artist, I spen much of my time doing more traditional stuff, but I had a friend last year that was very into digital type art. What he did was draw a semi-fully rendered, scan it, and paint digitally on top of it. It worked great because he had a map to work with so to speak. Hope that helps a little...

I feel like she looks more in a state of ecstasy than anything... and she's giving a little thumbs up to the viewer.

You also might want to create more of a trasnsition between her tail and her torso. I personally think that slowly fading the scales up her body is cooler than the Little Mermaid style "girl in a fish suit" look.

Another thing is that right now she looks completely dry. I'm not sure if that was your intent or not, but perhaps if you give her skin a slight bluish tone to indicate she's in the water? You'll also want to make her hair look more soft and "flowy".

And right now the tip of her tail looks a bit like a crap claw, hehe, maybe try playing with that some?

I think this is a nice thing you've got going, but then I am very partial to mermaid images. I just love mermaids =)

Just my little bit of input, Her face is to calm..as said before she looks almost asleep and happy....I think you need to tighten her eye's at least. Think about what your face does if someone kicks ya where it hurts....maybe get a friend to smack ya one while taking a pic of you with a digi cam or polaroid (just kidding hehehe).

Appart from that..good start I think.

Jezebel- Aaaah I see now! That pic is wonderful! I'll certainly be trying that--I was reverting to old cartoon style--for some reason the wacom just does that to me

Kaylon- ah yes, expressions are quite difficult for me. I dont know of anyone who'd "smack me one" on a whim, maybe I can bonk my head into the wall or somethin *ponders* *grins*

this is a newer attempt-I hope I got a few of the problems worked out. This will be a better base for color I think. There is a bump on her tail I need to fix though

The face still seems very peaceful... not really in pain as Chapel mentioned.

Goddamit, I'm sick of all you self-depreciating posters. Stop all the sighing. Be proud of what you post. Fuck everyone else..... I like the drawing, too. Nice anatomy. I would drop the white stuff in the background.
