Got inspired by the Rune demo. Definitely a work in progress:
I've used only hard-edged brushes so far. Have not made any attempt at shading or fine details... and therein lies my problem. I can't shade in PS without everything becoming blurry and plastic. I've tried shading with the paint brush at low opacities, but the way it builds up confounds my attempts. Without a pen-like, pressure-sensitive tool like a tablet (or pencil ), I'm lost. Can any mouse-users give any helpful tips? I'm really excited about posting stuff to the forum, and I want it to be my best. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Search through the forums to find topics about blending. There is even one by Sedul within the last day or so where Waylon and Liquid! give a pretty good way of blending without pressure sensitivity. Look around a little bit and I'm sure you'll find something. You did find this forum after all.
By the way, California in the muthafucking house!

Well, if you're mousing, it's going to be very hard to get soft, gradated color. The tools I use for blending in Photoshop are:
Airbrush tool
Paintbrush tool with Wet Edges on and opacity turned down
Smudge tool (particularly when used with brush tool)
blur filters on selected areas, main to set a base blend for an area before adding detail.
Also, it helps to work on different layers (for highlights, for example) so as to be able to isolate parts without messing up the whole image.

Hey sacrelicious, i used a mouse for a little while before i got my tablet. I'll give you a few tips i used, but i'm pretty much a newbie here so there is plenty of other people out there that could help you out more.
I like to decide where my light source is going to be coming from first. Say for example from the right side of the picture. Then to shade, of course lighter colors go to the right and darker to the left. I think the biggest thing is to keep adding colors. Take for example the guy's right shoulder, and arm. I only see 2 shades of brown, i would go and put in more shades of brown. Just keep going in and adding more, if you think there's too much blend them in. And use photo references of leather, metal, cloth, etc. and see what the textures look like and what colors are used.
Hopefully this makes some sense. Oh ya, it's all bout Cali! |

Wow, back from the dead! Thanks for all the tips everybody. In all honesty I kind of abandoned this picture soon after posting it. Blending with just paintbrush = crappy picture. Until I get a tablet, it's back to the airbrush for me. But maybe... maybe I'll work on this one some more. Thanks again!
By the way, im: I'm 37 million years old.
Much love to Cali!
