Here's a few portraits of a friend I drew recently. I'm happiest with the first one, but in all of them the hair seems really flat. Does anyone have any tips on how to create volume when drawing hair?

I think the face looks somehow weird... As to the hair i think you should draw harder lines so it looks more solid. And it needs more shadow. It seems like the hairs is creating no shadow at all on her forehead. |

I think part of your problem might be that you are drawing the top of the head too small. You might want to try drawing some bald people so that you can get a better idea of the shape of the top of the head.

That is definately part of the problem. I always draw noses too long and foreheads too short... I don't know why - even though I'm aware of it it's hard to stop.
Thanks for the tips both of you.

Actually, I kind of like the way the second pic is distorted... sort of looks like it's being viewed through a fish-eye lens.
I think you have the right idea with the hair, you just need to spend more time and effort on it... use controlled strokes instead of scribbling. |

I think you're just drawing for the most part what you think hair looks like. You need to examine what you're drawing and draw the hair and eye and the nose you see, rather than the nose and hair and eyes you think belong there.
As far as the hair goes, Draw the shapes of the hair as 3d forms. It looks right now like its all matted down. You're going to have to draw the lines that describe the flow of the hair from start to finish. It takes some time.
Anyway hope that helps, oh, and use lots of photo reference to learn about the way hair flows.

Your name sounds familiar. Did you ever make any player models for Quake 2?

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll practice some more and post if I get some better results.
Gliebster and Eagle-eye, yeah I design Quake2 and 3 player models, which were on the bodyshop alright. You can seem them on my website (in the sig).
Brue - yes, they're portraits of my friend Corinne. I designed her website, that's why I was pimpin it on this board, but I draw too although not as good as her. Recently I've neglected my 2D skills because I've been concentrating on 3D work so much but after seeing all the amazing work here I'm very eager to get back into drawing again.
