Hm... is that really necessary to have two different sections for image posts? do we really get that many _image_ posts? i'd personally prefer only one section where all images, finished or not, would be posted. and if everyone would use liquid!'s tags then there would be no prob differentiating "in progress" and "finished" images.
EDIT:
btw. what about posting traditional media stuff? what is the policy about that? i mean this is digital art forum but i would still like to see for example that life drawing class stuff posted in the same place as other images...

Ok.. putting my 10 cents into this... heehe. Hrmmm.. well I think random musings should remain there, never bothered to check what happens in there. Well anyway,
art discussion<---- might subdivde this one into line art, traditional, digital,3d
art gallery <---might subdivide this one into line art, traditional, digital, 3d
random musings
think it might work better this way... buh bye ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

I've made two big posts on this topic in the past so I won't go into it all again, but I think the proposed changes here sound workable.
Although I'd be -very- tempted to try just a single split first - 'Digital Art' becomes 'Digital Art' and 'Art Discussion' - and see how that goes. If further splitting is necessary then you could look at the other idea.
I think that an Art Discussion in conjunction with more thoughtful posting behaviour (ie. don't post 5 minute pencil drawings please..) from everyone on the forum would go a long way.
A concise "Posting Guidelines" in neon yellow when people post a new topic would help too.
Row.

I just had a brainstorm. What if we just keep the forum like this but make a few basic rules and possibly eaven join random musings so there would only be 1 forum.
While browsing i noticed many people using [somethin] in their posts. So there could be a rule to make everyone use this. This way everyone could just use the search function and look at what they are looking for. Like say you are looking for done pictures you would search with [PIC] or you feel like helping someone you search for [Help].
so the tags would be
[Help] = needs help with something in general
[Criticize]needs your oppinion on a pic
[Pic/Done] A ready picture.
[Musing]some random musing
This way you can post on a forum that everyone is looking at and everyone can just search what they want or just browse and choose a topic. what do you think about this? |

I like your idea. The only suggestion I have is maybe to make two 'discussion' forums. One could be art discussion and the other could be misc. discussion.

Hey Dhabih! Great idea, cause i'm tired
of sifting through too many posts just to see works in progress or finished pieces!
Breaking it up into 3 or 4 different areas would work out perfectly!

I did not read all of the posts here but I would like to just put in my 2 cents.
I think the forums splitting are a great idea
I mean I hate looking through like 50 pics and posts for that diamond in the rough that actually deserves commenting on. I know people need help here in there art but I mean people put up like the worst elfwood looking crap and then ask ( how can I fix this ) You can only make a pile of crap look so pretty. There are busy industry professionals surfing this board and it would be a lot more attractive to more pros if it wasn't being plauged by useless posts all day ( ohh look I drew my dogs nuts )...
etc...
Dahb I think you need to get some long time board members .people you trust and give them the power to close threads. They do this at www.theforce.net discussion forums and it helps keep highly repeated and useless threads from growing into a monster. I don't suggestion making someone take shiftss watching the board but there are almost always some good long time members surfing the board and they can go through and when they see ( Look my first pic ..crayola stick man CRIT ) they can maybe close that thread..depending on it's value to other members and the member posting.
I know you are busy dahb but if this was my board and I wanted to make this a place where top industry people hung out..( this is a great place to make contacts I want to see it get even better ) I would deffinatly try my best to keep the riff raf out and the useless threads to a minimume. Personaly I surf on a T-1 most of the time and I can get through most of the threads in 5 minuts but when you have to see that same thread over and over again you just want to scream ( EXMP: Look a cute girl that also draws ) and things like that. Well that is my 2 cents. I know that and a quaretr will buy you a glass of water and Mcdonalds but hey I only say something because this forum is IMPORTANT!!

It sounds good Dhabih.
I find it a shame that Spooge, Fred, Loki, Vebjorn, Danny, and many others no longer seem post or crit here... quality and meaningful posts are very hard to come by these days, and it even discourages me to the point of doing the same and no longer be present up to some extent, for the simple reason that I love this forum for what it was because it wasn't one that was filled with any kid with internet like all the other art forums out there... the distinguishing line between the two is blurring very quickly.
This may sound like an elitist comment, but I don't care at this point. I think the real guys are just losing interest because it's losing it's edge, and without the masters around, what makes this place so great? I think people should stop publicising this board (sorry Immi).

I think it's completely inappropriate for one person to decide what art is "crap", what art is "finished", what art is "good", etc...
You can only get better by practicing. And your practice can be more productive if you are able to receive critiques and comments from so many people in a forum like this. The newer, less-experienced artists need these crits far more than anyone else. Some of these "newbies" are also quite young. I believe that some of the artists here need to think back to their experience at that age and base their opinions off that fact, rather than comparing a 12 year old's photo collage CD cover to Spooge's Feng girl and calling it "crap".
I think splitting the forum twice would work better than splitting it three times. I also think there should be some guidelines to follow - Perhaps a size limit? I've seen people post some VERY large images. Anything outside that size limit needs to be posted as a URL rather than an IMG? Just a suggestion.

right on dhab, right on.
[edit]
I also agree with rinaldo about the tutorial section. I think that's a great idea. It would keep them all in one place and it would be a lot easier to search through them.

Im sorry to say that i dont agree at all, this would just mean it would take more time to check everything out and i would simply miss alot of pictures.
Ofcouse i love mickes/joachims/spooges/and others 'scetches' sometimes these are tutorials sometimes in progress sometimes finished and i would have to look everywhere to find them.

I'm afraid I can't agree with the idea of splitting the forums up. While it seems like an easy solution I have seen it bring about the deaths of SO MANY other forums.
What always happens is that one or two areas will be the most popular while the rest go ignored. People wonder why their questions in the "Traditional" section don't get answered so they start posting them in the "Digital" forum just to get a response. The response inevitably is a long flame thread of "you're in the wrong f***ing forum!".
Splitting does not solve the problem of off topic or inappropriate posts - if anything it compounds it.
I don't know if there is an easy solution to the growing pains the forum is experiencing or if a solution is really needed at all. Sometimes it's best to keep things as they are, warts and all, than to do a complete rebuild and lose the sense of simplicity and community that made the board popular in the first place. |

First of all I think that this forum does need a split because the mass amount of posts here. Secondly I think the idea of putting a limit or atleast put in the FAQ that people should try and keep the image sizes down. Its so f*cking anoying having to load a page for several minutes! I can understand up to 50k per pic or greater when bigger pics, but when people puts up images about 300x300 that are at 100k I really get pissed of.
Also I have seen a forum that has quite a nice function.
You have an option page where you can check what pages to load, like I want digital art and diskussion only and puts those on one page that I can look at, and I can change how many threads that should be shown. Now I dont know if UBB supports this sort of things and its probably hard to make yourself.
well the forum is the one att overclockers.com
just my thoughts.

Just to pick up on a suggestion by someone else about being able to see the number of people who have actually viewed a post. I don't think this is a good idea. I put up a post a few weeks ago and was able to figure out that at least 100 people had looked at the post and gone to my site. However only 2 people commented. It was quite frustrating and I just think that is going to create more problems than it solves.

I dont think a Moderator is needed, bcuz most of the time the people of the forum will notice. if someone post something in lets say finished work, and its just half finished, i _think_ most would just inform the person to put it in Work in progress section, then the thread will slowly fall to the bottom ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Haha, I just finished typing this message to ANOTHER post about the same thing....

On the surface, this idea sounds like a good one, but after considering it's implications I feel it would severely damage the forum. The only forum everyone would visit would be the finished artwork forum-and rarely, if ever, the 'in-progress art' etc forums.
There must be a way to restructure the forum or it's posting criteria/content. As most have said who have been with this forum for a while, it has degenerated-for whatever reasons. I feel that some of the inspirational artists who were here before have tired of the overwhelming boom of new posts which pretain to nothing and have left (or rarely contribute anymore.)
I feel their absense, as I have much less to look forward to in developing my own skills as an artist and illustrator. When these people leave, it makes them once again out of our reach, as I felt they were before I came to this forum.
Because of the massive amount of posts, being a busy man, I have resorted to only reading posts that A: have more than 15 posts or B: have a VERY interesting Topic. This is sad, as once I was able to read every post that came in, and reply to almost every one that I could contribute to sensibly.
So what do you do when you have hundreds of users, and so many ideas and attention seekers running around? I'd say you lay down some strick rules for posting in the first place. Redefine what the PURPOSE of the Digital Art Forum is here for. I can't say much about the answers to those two questions, but I'm hoping those people who read the sub-15 reply posts will be able to contribute here and tell everybody what shouldn't be bothered posting. I've heard "5-minute sketches of crap", and "scans of stuff I'll never make digital", this is a good place to start at least.
I wish I could give everybody a definitive solution, but I've been removed from the forum recently during it's 'downhill slide', so I can't give to much in the way of solutions. I believe it comes down to a collective decision by the members as to what is tolerated and not tolerated. Once this has been formulated, put a link to it at the top of the topics page and refer breachers to it as they occur or arrive.
So here's a call for suggestions! Please give us an idea of what you believe this forum is here for, what should not be posted here, and what should be.
Thanks for you thoughts and comments in advance.

shait- did I really ramble on that long?
After reading through the ideas you present earlier, Dhabih, I believe that if the forum members are behind it, then it will work.
It's a gamble, but it might be worth taking in the end.
Up to you guys!

Go ahead and do it Dhab. These are your forums something needs to be done and you're the best man to do it. Please, please no moderaters I think the public opinion is enough to discourage all these bad post. We didn't have more then one moderator for the mongoose, and threnody problems and we don't need more then one now. That's just a horrible idea. |

I have always been a fan of forums that are categorized. I like being able to go straight to what I want to see or read about. The way Dhabih is suggesting we split it up is a great idea. If you want to check out some finished works for some inspiration or you need some hlep on your half completed painting you know exaclty where to go. I think this plan will only strengthen the forum. But then again thats just my 2 cents.

I would refer you to DCTP(http://www.segatech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi), which has maintained a solid structure despite popularity. They simply force people to email the admin if they want to be in the forum. Also, admissions are only available some of the year, so if you want to get in, you have to hang around until it opens. Also, they're very strict with the rules(no flames, etc). I think that although it's sort of exclusionary, it also keeps the forum from becoming a big pile of stinky stuff. Just a thought. I'm against multiple forums in general.

well well, here's an idea of a whole other kind...
I know this will step on a lot of toes, but so be it ;P
How about the 'serious' people of the forum make a forum all of their own? Motivated people getting advice from other motivated people.
I know for a fact that it works pretty well, in other areas. Why wouldn't it work for digital art as well?
Fact is, it would.
Get a user base of 5 to ? people, and you're kicking up dust bad.
Maybe you won't get all the cheering from the general crowd, but you'd sure be getting solid advice or at least genuine critique, instead of the often prevailing 'elfwood' syndrome where 95% of all people praise the worst crap to the skies.
(no offense to the truly great artists that DO preside there and here)
So how to go about it?
Well, someone takes initiative, maybe alone or maybe with a few other guys. Creates this other web-board.
It could be a hidden board at excite boards, yahoo or some other easy to use place.
Then simply invite people who have artistic talent and who are serious about developing it.
It's that easy.
I'm part of another 'thing', on irc, that works quite well.
We're not a group of individuals who keep to ourselves. Not at all.
We invite a lot of people, but they're all motivated individuals who in some way have shown this. (obviously, because how else could someone notice them
Anyone who thinks this is an elitist idea is free to do so.
I don't think this has to be the case though.
Not everyone is the best, and I envision a mix of various talents in a place like that.
Just without the people who simply 'clutter' up the sijun forums as it is.
Alright, have fun all. That's what it's all about ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Well dhab, I love the way you want to split up the forum, and I like the idea of having some chat room, or maybe a channel on Dalnet or Undernet. The channel on IRC is easy to do and whould really help a lot on keeping people in contact. And well, for a last thought, I think nothing whould spoilt the forum if it's not the people in it, really. (excuse my crappy english, though) |

As usual, I agree with Tinusch here. No more posts for Dives.
I think moderators are a bad idea though. Giving people that sort of power just provokes bitchiness. It's a little to totalitarian for my tastes. Can't we just remain the anarcho-syndiclistic commune we've always been?
