well before anyone tells me this should go in the random musing ( which it can go both ways) i have a question. Well i am currently in a programming class at my highschool and we are learning visual basic 6.0 and we are in the the part of the course where he gives us till the end of the term to make a program ( 2 months about ) and i decided to make a game like everyone else in our class. anywho i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a game. remember my skills are limited and we cant make anything 3d lol. Well if anyone comes up with a cool idea i will for sure put you name in the credits. adn this has to do with digital art because i will be drawing the graphics for the game myself... WEll i hope you people come up with neat ideas.

ps: no this isnt a shortcut to the work. i will be doing all the code im just searching for some ideas right now.

so far i thought of making a really really cheap rip off of a diablo type game or like a really old final fantasy that is really small. like a guy waking around on a map and every once in a while a monstor pops up and you have to kill it . but its always nice to hear ideas from other people =) sorry if i keep on rambling

No no.. always be different! If everyone says yes, say no. If everyone is making a game, make a music sampler or something! Or sound recorder.. Something simple but kickass!

You should see what all those warez art/programming dUd3z are doing.. Amazing demos and utilities. Even a file renamer looks like out-of-this-world program :)

I mean that to say that it doesnt have to be something that everyone else is doing to be on top.
Just think it over again and give more creative idea.

As i said depending on what you can do, those things you might want to consider:
Sound recorder/filters station, Program installer, Email checker, MP3 encoder, Clocks (as a small side-project), quick Shell replacement for win with a few 1337 features, notepad-style editor, music player with effects.... GAME? :)

Anyway it all depends on what your skillz are. Nevermind me

That's why at the end i realized i was on the roll again and shamefully said "nevermind me" hehe.

Anyway lets think of the game you can do then.. arr gotta do HW now, no time!

i think a really good example of a simple game with clean cut graphics it synj's, im sure you can get it at his site synj.net, anyways, i think you should do like a birdseye view race car game !! then you could make really cool looking maps and cars

just and idea

We had the same assignment only with vb3 heh.
I'd suggest a simple puzzle game. Like this one for example http://www.logicmazes.com/theseus.html

I made an Arcanoid clonewith 45deg angles, that one is really easy to write. A hangman could do as well.
Do something simple, something you can finish by the end of the semester. I wouldn't suggest making a sprite based game unless its really simple like synj's flash banners. VB is the worst tool for that sort of thing.

I personally think you should either try programing a kick but 2d game or use DARK BASIC (do a net search ) programming language and make a good 3d game fast. You will need decent 3d models to get you started but believe me dark basic makes it really easy to get going fast. You might try getting an art major to make you 3d models to use when you are programing..then he can use the game you both make to get hima job..see how that works

Doing the artwork for a game can potentially take a long time. If you want to demonstrate that you are a solid programmer and have the ability to think logically, you could do a game which is not graphics intensive but has a computer opponent. An example (and don't laugh) might be something like Othello. The graphics are simple so you can spend your time working on the AI. Hopefully this way, your time can be spent improving the computer's ability to play the game.

Back in high school, I made an "advanced" space invaders game.... multiple weapons, different enemy AI, etc. It was a lot of fun and not particularly difficult, and it had a lot of room to expand... for instance, once I got the code for enemies marching straight down the screen, the game was fully functional, and I could have quit at that point. But since I had a month left, I could take the time to add individual neat features that added just that much more to the game.

hey chris yeah chess was orignally one of the games i wanted to do but to tell you the truth sooo many possibilities it would take 6 months to compile all the code myself . anyways today i talked to my teacher and i asked him ifg i could do asteroids but he told me NO. he said the programme or game has to do with what we have learned soo far ( which isnty much) the funest game we could do now is equivelant to a trivia game. Now everyone in the class has to do some kind of trivia game. Huh soo i said screw that and im still making asteroids BUT instead of being asteroids you destroy the point of the game is to fire on letters and you have to find the hidden word. If you fire on the wrong letter you loose a life or somethign like that. So my teacher said i could do it that way.

Now i started to project but i ran in a little prob. I need to make the ship turn 360 degrees ( 2d not 3d ) from a birds eye view and i REALLY dont know how to do that. If anyone is into programme and can explain to me how to lets say rotate a picture box pls post will be great help. ( i downloaded source code for asteroides game but the games are really difficult to understand since half the code has all these variables that i have never seen aqdn my teacher told me there are other ways i can do it ) ANyways if anyone can explain to me how to take a picture box and rotate it will be GREAT help. If you have nothign to say pls dont get mad at me for posting a porgramming topic.

Man, I wish VB was in my HS. I had to work with QBasic

How about learning a little bit of network proxy code and make a multiplayer chess game over your schools lan (hopefully they have one) we did anyway. That can expand to have different chess pieces, different types of boards, maybe even expand it to a 3d board in later developments.

its such a cool game, or make Pacman !
Send me whatever you make, if you could be bothered to.

If you can't rotate a sprite or make it partially transparent hmmm...looks bad for a game.

this all reminds me of my own VB stuff, i stopped back in '98 with coding to concentrate on art :/

eat screenie

My last thingy. Was a sort of database for cheats, trainers etc. Even with separate tool to check some websites for new cheats dl etc ...ach, how naive i was
I still use it a lot to write down all my info or store commented patches/updates ...since the text is all crypted and additional files merged into 1 single file it does a fine job :] ...unless 1 byte of a database gets corrupted i guess, i never wrote some fix tool or the like...

Ehm anyways, got a friend who's into GFX with VB, he knows how to rotate bitmaps but i dunno how simple the code is.
If you still need the code by now drop me a line and i'll get it from him. I don't see him until next weekend tough.

About your 2D rotation question:
If [X',Y'] is the coordinates of a point [X,Y] rotated counter-clockwise by an angle A, then the formula is:
X' = X * cosA + Y * ( -sinA )
Y' = X * sinA + Y * cosA
