Hello everyone well this is one of my first times posting on this board!
I have a question about Art Institutes. Where did you guys attend college and also what would you suggest as a good one to go to. You see I am a junior in highschool (11th grade) and i really want to get into illustration or animation. The only good art institute near me is the Center for Creative Art and Design in USA,Michigan. I have heard of the Savanah Art Institute but I was just wondering if any of you have any good places that you would suggest. Also do any of you have any good tips on creating an impressive portfolio?
Oh and if this info helps also I am thinking that I want to get a Masters in illustration and bachleors in animation. The thing is none of the art institutes around me have programs that can get you a masters. They only give out bachleors. Would it really be wise to go for a masters degree in art. Do any of you have a masters in anything or just bachleors degree?

I suggest you look into RISD... Rhode Island School of Design, that is one of the best art schools in the world believe it or not..digital or traditional

as far as i understand calarts, sheridan and ringling (spellings probably wrong but i think its in flodida) are supposed to be really good for animation. calarts seems to pump out disney, pixar, and ilm animators left and right. can't go wrong with RISD though. i only wish i could do it again and attend one of these schools, but alas its too late. but good luck to you.

I guess what i need to do though is do what someone told that 13 year old kind on the forum to do. Get a couple of sketchbooks and pencil kits and lock myself in my room or something and just DRAW! and stop looking at everyone's style and try to create my own. I am an average artist i guess... but I need to be build a very spectular portfolio to get a huge scholarship because my family isn't rich and they won't pay for any out of state colleges unless i can get a HUGE scholarship or something like that.

My advice would be to attend a local university to get your basics down. Drawing I and II, etc. After you feel comfortable with your abilities, then draw like hell. Draw everything and then when that becomes comfortable enough to do in the dark. Build yourself a portfolio of the best that you can produce (not two hour sketches) and hit the streets. Show your work to everyone and above all have total confidence in yourself. Alot of damn wonderful artists never attended a school of art.
I have a degree in Graphic Design and it got me a great big nothing, unless you count the student loan I have been paying off since 1988.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned art center. I've been looking into variouis art schools for a good while now and art center's name has arisen in every conversation I've entered into. I'm curious how the Illustration program is there. Any takers?

simple answer, do not go to art schools, it's a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihiiiigh waste of time and money and suddenly you find yourself from a cubicle at the age of 35 wondering where the fuck your life went and spot the white shirt and black tie on you and the Marlboro Lights pack in your breast pocket and a   communicator cell phone and a photo of your wife and 5 kids in your wallet and lunch tickets and realize you're telling european blonde jokes to your co-workers and they actually laugh at you then go back to their 6x8 wacom's..

I read a good article about it a while ago, apparently it's a good talent mall for pixar and industrial light and magic.

well...sorry fausto...I went to art school and I worked hard and I drew like crazy and painted every day and I worked harder than I should have and it paid off...yes it is expensive but it gets you around other artists and around faculty and exposes you to new ideas and to companies. Yes you can go to art school and waste your talent and time and end up in debt and have no job..but that is up to you...and only you. Art school is just the catalyst for development. the hard work and the harder work of doing more than is expected is up to you to do.

I went to Ringling. It is in Florida. Art Center and School of Visual arts would have been my other choices...unless I only wanted to do traditional animation and then Id go to cal arts. ...the key is to look at the kind of work coming out of the schools and decide which is more suited to you. thats it. BUT I did stay in community college til I had my foundation skills set. Art School foundation is often no different than the same info you would get from a good teacher anywhere.

Honestly though..my best teacher ever was at a community college...then at the illustration academy which taught the same things on a professional level. I have a whole different level of instruction with the artists here at black isle.

draw and paint every day...draw from life and paint from life as much as you can...preferrably every day. if you want to animate...do it every day...research..study the masters at your chosen craft and work work work.
