RobT, please, calm down! We in Spain are very critics with ourselves and when something is intended to be a joke you shouldn't get upset... if it was someone from USA what would you have said?
Flexible Elf, give an oportunity to the other board, look at it now please.
This should move to Random Musings now, don't you think? Let's let this thread go to the dark and mysteious second page...

Hahahahaha...I thought it was great how the joke just kept on playing out.
I live in Canada. We have given the USA its funniest comedians, most dramatic drama stars, most briliant geniousez. If you ever watch a very popular show here called "This Hour Has 22 Minuits" we CONSTANTLY make fun of the US naivety, their ethnocentricity, their general populations Dull, if patriotic wit.

America, your great, but you guys are just compounding the worlds running gag on you.
Hey, france *behind hands*...america..whisper whisper..america....

Aha! The secret is out, Isric! So you're from Canada... eh?

This thread is so silly.

Whoa. Some flamewar here.
I'll add my own ramble here.
If there is anything i dont like about america, it is the culture. Not the culture in itself, of course, it is as valuable and unique as all the rest .. But the thing that it is spreading to the whole world, pop music, fast food chains and television - the commercial culture suffocating everything else, disturbs me.

I agree there. Many of us in the US are not happy with the overbearing commercialism such as McDonalds and all the crappy pop music and stuff. There are states like Vermont and towns across the US that fight and protest it.
Just remember that corporate commercialism is different than American culture. There are many different cultures in America. We have states like Vermont and Northeren Maine that are untouched. Very beautiful states indeed.
I myself do not drink piss ass pilsner beer, eat at McDonalds or listen to any crappy MTV music. I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth and have worked hard for everything I wanted. I am not an exception here either. All I am saying is that not everyone fits the stereotypical vision that many seem to have about America.

I'll be surprised if any American Democratic citizen knows of famous philosophers, besides Socrates or Plato. Or, should I say, you may KNOW the names, but not what they discussed about in their books and essays.

Still USA is the one country in the world where people study the less philosophy. I don't know if it's good or bad... I know I have learned alot from it, philosophy classes in college are the ones I loved the most, next to french (mother tongue), math and physics. To hell with chemistry and gym and geology and all the other by-heart stuff

I found it amusing how RobT was defending the US way of life, but then I saw hes from the only place that may make that country seem good...

But I have to admit that their TV-shows are great when Im bored and need something to laugh at. Just take Ricki Lake or Jenny Jones, and youll realize 90% of the US citizens are fat, cheating and have actually heard of 'intelligence', but not really got the hang of it...and must say 'Y hea wot Im sayin?!' at least once in every sentence to be accepted. Please note that the closest Ive been to USA was on a trip to Brighton...but Id like to go there sometime! Would be amusing!

And I wont say sweden is that good either, too high taxes, stupid politicians, too uptight people, uninteresting history (at least since christianity appeared here) and only boring movies with uninteresting actors.

Oh, yes, I have prejudices, but if I didnt, there would be so few things I could really say anything about!

Keep up with the humor!! I need a laugh, Im studying!

WARNING - LONG WINDED SOAPBOX SPEECH COMING UP!

Sorry about this, people. I started writing this and it just flowed. Read if you want, skip if you don't. I'd have put it in Random Musings, but hell, the thread's here and it'll die in a couple of days anyway, no harm done.

-------

This is quite funny, but I ran out of patience with it about a third of the way through and started skim reading... I'd like to say a few things, though...

Uh oh. JayBee brings the flames! No, I don't. Yes, I agree that the majority of my views of the US are gained through media... however, I'd like to point out that I don't watch American TV (don't even have cable - figure that one out )

America, as a nation, is the most powerful in the Western world. This is a fact, and as such it means that America gets a fair amount of coverage, as well as our local stuff. In America, however, all the local stuff is American, so that kind of limits the amount of foreign import your media brings.

Anyway, we've had a LOT of stuff about your election, and I really must say that it scares me. For a country (Note, COUNTRY. I'm not getting at AMERICANS - see next paragraph!!) that is so technologically advanced to not be able to set up a foolproof system of determining the settled will of its populace is a little unsettling. Your civil servants have had 5 years to get this right, and yet they can't even design ballot papers that make sense. It turns out that, normally, votes only actually get COUNTED if the result is a close one, according to the exit polls. For a country that prides itself on its Democracy, this sounds a bit like Democracy-by-media, than Of the people, for the people, by the people.

ANYWAY, what I really want to say is this - Yes, America seems to be an insular country, and with fairly good reason. HOWEVER, by participating in this board, I think that the Americans here should be counted along with the Americans for whom I have respect. This board is a coming together of artists. I've yet to see a "Geez, you mean you guys in ScotchLand actually have TV?" post. I HAVE spoken to an American who not only asked me this, but refused to believe that we invented it. With ambassadors like that, the opinions of some non-Americans become clear.

Anyway, look. I realise this was posted as a joke. Hell, when I got this as an email, I laughed my arse off! Jokes like this play on stereotypes, and that's what's funny. Remember that next time you tell an Irish joke

Two final points, then I'll shut up and do pennance for posting here and firing this thread back to the top of the list!

1) Akolyte, don't back up the "Americans think everyone else has yet to discover fire" argument:
quote:
One answer:
ICBM
We have 'em, you don't

Yes we do. We just don't brag about it

2) One last direct reply:
quote
Quote:
The US is a great place to live. I love it. So do tons of other people... more immigrants than we can shake a stick at.

We in Britain had a taste of what it was like to live in America for about a decade (without the bad TV, of course). She was called Margaret Thatcher, and was a big proponent of the American Dream - the Rich get Richer, and... poor? We don't have any...

Basically, America's great if you have money. If you don't, it f**ks you. Sorry, but this is true.

Get sick? Cash up front, or else die.
Get arrested? Cash up front, or else get gassed.
Wanna get elected? Cash up front, or else get junta'ed.

And so on. America is a Capitalist country. As such, it's on the same side of the politcal fence as Thatcher and Hitler. Sorry, but it is. Personally, I'd be much more comfortable about America if I could here someone voice some left-wing opinions and be taken seriously.

America lost the Cold War, in my opinion, as it's political system was sooo damaged by fear of the left, that it elected an ageing actor with Altzheimer's to lead it, and hasn't recovered since.

RIGHT. This is getting ridiculous. I'm going to post this now, cos I don't want to throw away a half-hour's work, but I'm angry at myself for doing so.

final word - this is in no way directed at any Americans on this board. I am not attacking anybody (including the two people I quoted). All I am doing is giving my view of America, which I think is fairly typical of my peers. Where this opinion has come from is up to you to decide. I've never been to America, so if my opinion is the result of media manipulation, please ignore me.

Peace to you all, I respect everyone here.

Oh boy, I've just read most of the posts under this topic. What a useless waste of brainpower.
I am a Russian speaking Ukrainian who lived in US for past 5 years. I just want to say that people like Hlid Skjalff with their idiotic outbursts of ignorance should be completely ignored, because they do not represent an intelligent type of life from Russia or any other neighboring country.
Don't assume anything based on what someone with an Internet connection said.

Ahhh, Monday morning and I see all is chirpy and joyess.
How about well all hold hands and dance in a circle?, we could make up a song where different famous people all have a part at singing and then we all join in for the chorus. What a wonderful new and exicting idea.

(PS Australians blokes like sheep more than us.....heh......Did a dingo really take her baby?)

I already know the answer to it from a science/technical point of view. I just thought inline with the rest of the thread, it was appropriate.
