This is my first try to a portrait. I realized after I scanned it that the left eye is way too slanted. I need help ... I welcome any comments and tips.

Well, like you said, the eyes are not symetrical. other than that, they seem a little bit too big for that head.
now, the proportions are good and the ranges of values are great. i really like the rendering of the nose and mouth, very good depth.
just fix those eyes and finish the hair.

First off, overall nice pose, and the completely shaded bg helps give the person more focus.. Nice shading from what i see so far, but try to bring in a lil more darker darks and lighter lights. The obvious problem is the left eye, and i also notice that the eyes look a bit more cartoony than realistic. I also notice the nose lacks definition.. it seems to be flat and a lil to the side until you hit the bottom, then you just see the nostrils..
You shouldn't give up on this, if more time is put into it and finsihed, it will turn out to be a really good looking portait..
