Went out and got myself mirror - big improvement over last weeks effort I reckon (and hopefully this one won't scare the kiddies);
Using a mirror instead of a postage-stamp sized b&w photo makes things -way- easier. Although the lighting still had to be half guessed - the damn sun disappeared over the hill!
Still minor problems, but I think that's probably 98% what I look like. Very pleased.
(about 2.5 hours in Photoshop)

The image is pretty cool and I like the way that you have created the hair. I didn't see the first one so I don't know how much it would have scared the kiddies (were you upset that the sun went down as you don't seem to cheery like?).

suma, yes that looks a lot better !
Much better colors and more life to the face. The earlier ones was much more stiff. If I would give some comments/critiques, it would be to identify areas a bit more, like those areas that are sharped edged, etc. I don't know how you look except for this, but still there's things than can be good to exaggerate to give more "inner shapes" in a a way. Eyes and nose, including the small variatys of lines around the eye and the wrinkles following and all the small variatys of wet skin, hard edges, etc on the nose..... hope you don't mind be mentioning this, it still looks great
smart of you to buy a mirror, makes thing more fun, more difficult but still you're less atatched to a photo, which I think is good.

I showed my kids and they were still scared.
But in all the 5 year old said that he was impressed with the use of color and technique.
The 7 year old just ran out of the room.

It's amazing what a nights sleep can do to an image. I thought it looked pretty much like me when I went to bed but looking at it this morning it suddenly looked like someone else entirely. (I also had another look at the old portrait - omg, what was I thinking?)
Here's a quick tweak;
Smaller ear, shortened the whole lower section of the face (the nose in the first edition looks awfully long..), moved the left eye out a bit, plus general tweaks. This version looks a *lot* more like me than the first version but there's still something not right about the eyes that I can't sort out. I also brightened up which is something I forgot to do last time (my paint monitor is too bright so my images come out dark).
Joa; Your comments are -great- they help me think about things I wouldn't think about otherwise (I was very concious about colors doing portrait B after your comment for A).
I did start doing sharper edges in this tweaked version of B but I think I need to be a bit more comfortable with how everything works before I can start looking at introducing definite lines. This image was done in a sort of fake hard-bristle brush which lets me work fairly generally without worrying too much about finite points. It works on average.
Here's a 1:1 segment to show what I mean;
But as I do more of these I will definitely think more about sharp lines and more specific details.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Looks really good. I think the part I really like is the closeup of the eye. Even with such rough brushstrokes (well, rough compared to mine anyway ) the iris looks so real. It's almost like you can visualize it as a contact lens and just pluck it off your screen. Very nice

humm
me like the orange look ;
i think it s a pretty good job, the only thing that bothers me are the eyes ; maybe they have been drawn too big ? I mean the end of your two eyes are just under the end of eyebrows, i think it should have some space between them .
Also the pupil seems to be designed a way with to much width ;
the upper eyelashes are too present and the bottom ones are missing . the last thing I see, the beginning of the eyes seem to be a little too high .
hope it will help you man, It is really goo d as it is so far

Jez: Thanks.
Toast: some good comments on the eyes there. i think you're right about them being slightly too big and I might have a go at sizing them down tomorrow and see how it looks.
Yoshi: ouch, you've got me looking like a demented vampire! Interesting to see your interpretation, although I'm not sure the repaint works well to my eyes.
The bright orange lighting came from a combination of evening sunlight and slightly transparent orange curtains (makes my whole room orange in the afternoon, which is why I don't like to paint until the sun is gone usually..). Plus I increased the chroma at one point just to try something different.

i'm not sure if repaint works either i still think thou that the whole thing would look much better with orange pushed out in some places. demented vampire - sounds good to me, eheh.
the problem with the eyes, they should look like 2nd one.

OK, one last try;
Yeah, that's starting to work pretty well. No more revisions, I promise.
