Straight from photo reference, this was more of an exercise to familiarise myself with Painter than anything else. I thought I should know what I'm doing before I jump into one of my more time consuming illustrations.

I've posted a close up section of the final, and a few steps of the process I went through. I was trying to keep a loose feel to it so I worked from very loose, large shapes, and slowly refined it, trying to keep some of the fresh and random brushwork of the first few stages.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the pic or the technique. Is this how you usually approach a digital painting, or do you use a different method entirely?

Thanks Ko and SporQ, Painter is a great program, once you get your bearings. I've found a couple of screwy things in it, but that's partly what these portrait studies are for - to find out what I shouldn't try to do.

And he can't smoke all the time Faust, he's still gotta live long enough to star in Unforgiven. - anyway this should still your cravings:

I like it a lot.

About the technique, i've got nothing to say, you seem to know what you're doing.

btw, could you post the reference photo?

For those interested, here's the reference photo:

Binke, the main brushes I used were the round and flat smeary brushes at various settings (mostly playing with size, feature, resat and bleed) - it's great the way you can mix the paint on the canvas with these brushes, it's like smearing around wet paint. I either used the palette knife or the Sargent Brush (in the 'Artists' group) for the background (can't quite recall which one it was). I aslo used a modified version of the Sargent Brush (Size set to random and Angle set to tilt) to give it some nice, crunchy, rough strokes in places to break up the smooth painty look which didn't quite suit the subject.
Well, I hope that helps - let me know if you need it explained more clearly.
