Damn that's some heavy diss there.. If you never heard of it before it doesnt mean anybody's hiding.
Russia was at the top in all kinds of arts until the communists kicked in, and cold war started.. Art/literature/movies, everything eslse... i'm a little disappointed in humanity from now on.

I forget to say that i don't personally like this style of painting, but i have HUGE respect to it. There is a huge collection of this art in Tretyakov gallery, so you might wanna loo for that.. One painter i remember is Repin (there are tens more in the gallery, if not hundreds).
