I'm just wondering where everyone who's now working in any sort of illustration, design, or otherwise graphical field has gone to school. What degrees have you attained and in what areas of study? |

I haven't gone to any college yet, but i already learned that going to any school to study art is a waste of time! And money. Better sit at home and just practice.
When you go to college they make you draw "correctly" but its all crap because it takes years hehe, better do some graffiti or someplace instead.
Somebody would post a pic.. and another would comment "his leg isnt supporting 83% of his weight" and i go "what! i don't even think about that, i think if it looks good or not". Too bad not all people think lime me, world would of been perfect if they were.

I'm actually almost finished an engineering degree (civil) which has nothing to do with design and illustration. I've been working for a couple of months for a web design company and from my experience (at least in Australia), to get into this field, you just need a bit of paper from one of these college type places that offer 6-12 month courses. If you are thinking more illustration, these jobs seem alot harder to come by and you will need some serious art school training.

Hey Matt, I'm in Sydney too. I'm only in year 11, but I'm still curious about career opportunities in Australia. I take it there are little if any jobs here.
Do you know much about the art/illustration related industry over here?
Also, which Uni are you attending (if you don't mind me asking)?
I'm thinking about doing industrial design, that way I wont be entirely dependent on illustration and art. I read that they teach you a lot about manufaturing, design and things like that. Has anyone taken this course before? Was it good or not?

Never went to school ... this plane with lots of books crashed near the village i was living in, and altho it killed half of the villagers, most of the books survived.
Which is good.
Cos thats where i got my education from.
Then one day i ran away from home cos my parents wont buy a 'television set' ..(they didnt even know what it was) ...
I ran and ran and ran and ended up in singapore where i furthered my studies by reading books in the national library and living on its roof for many years.

JasonN,
I completed the Industrial Design Program at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1994. I cannot recommend the art institute or any 2 year degree for that matter, but industrial design was definatly the most interesting set of courses i've encountered. I learned a great deal about design in a lot of different fields, which gives you many choices. |

I went to Louisiana Tech University-a predominately technical school, but I loved every minute of most of my art classes. I only finished 3 years before I moved to Dallas

crrently I am visiting www,design-factory.de in the 2nd semestre and I can say, it's not a waste of time, you can develop your own style independant from the design guidelines - they even push you to combine your own creativity with common design ideas, and not to learn tio do how others say it's the right thing to do.
I am glad to have the chance visiting such a school. |

I studied computer graphics at a community college for about a year and realised it probubly wasn't the best way to go, since I was teaching my self everything. I'm going to try and go for a 4 year Industrial Design Degree at the Unversity of Washington, but I got a long way to go. |
