About 3 weeks ago francis did this cool girl in a tank and I finally got to it. I'm slowly trying to learn new things and improve on what I know, so I'm trying to incorporate more painterly elements to my comicbook coloring style.(And figure out lighting, copmosition, contrast, etc.)

But here's a little color addition to a fantastico francis piece!

sheezus thats some crazy stuff mag. tooo many good artists around here, i need to get better. the texturing on the mexh is really nice with all the lights and everything. you even have the green glow from the interior lights on her leg, very very cool!

do you do coloring professionally or something?

Yeah. I color comics in my spare time, when I'm not trying to be a better artist. It's pretty darn fun, But I think it has collapsed my understanding of how to draw and paint a little and I'm trying to go back to a more traditional art style eventually...long road to travel I think!

This is very cool. I never would have thought to do this kind of color scheme, so it's fun to look at this. I wish you guys could see the metal texture up close - it's so nice.

I agree with Francois. Very inventive colors. And a great, solid job. Good show, old chap!

The colors actually remind me of what Masamune Shirow would use . . . and considering its a drawing of a fuchikoma, that was a good call

Nice.

Yames Rochelle,

Sick! I dig the Mech. The painterly style that you were talking about really came through on the tank. The morphing of the two styles is really working for me. It rocks man. Do you have a decsion making process involved in which avenue you take? Like the metal, I see it very clearly there, while lighting seems to stay in the same vein as your comic techniques? I've noticed that your figures do as well..........

Right on Right on.

James:

Nice work, however I would love to see you draw something, rather than coloring other people's stuff. Don't get me wrong coloring is a useful skill, but its just a minor part of any art related skillset. Most importantly, if you practice and improve your drawing skills, all else, including coloring/paionting will improve with it.

Just my two cents.

Yes you're right of course, and that's my eventual next step. I'm concentrating on getting back into pencil and paper as well as computer color, but up till now I've been a little too busy to really concentrate on it. A lot of the artists here have got me inspired to work a lot harder at it. Thanks for the props dude! You being one of the premier colorists in the industry, your oppinion is greatly appreciated. Good or bad.

Ciao for now,

Jamez,

Amazing job, man. Lets see a larger version and maybe a little description/tutorial about how you did the metal texture... then you'd be my hero.

Wow, I have been cruising this forum now for quite sometime, under the alias of gabereiser...hehe. I think this is a neato picture. But magpie, why do you draw them girls in a robot spider. Why not a man? YOu know that women can't drive em big machines like that. I think you should get rid of her and put in a man.

I also think the colors are too womany. Maybe fix em up too so they ain't so foofooie.

I wanna be a colorist in the funny books too but I have been having hard times in the job world. No one likes my stuff. I must not be real good like you Magpie. WHere did you learn to draw so well. YOu also got the same last name as another artist on these forums. You brothers with Francis Tsai?

Keep up the good work and I hope you can get a job soon. I love the coloring of the handle inside the lid. It kid rocks man...

Yeah yames you really good. THere is one thing in the image that bugs me. It looks like the mask from your shadow on the dark side of the mech has bled into her thigh region. Is this a casted shadow or is this a muck up. If it is a cast, I would think it would conform to her leg shape more. Other than that, I think you have a shot at taking out Shirow in the coloring dept....

Post some more steampunk shtuff....

Yeah, trying to eventually branch out and learn what I'm doing. Working on Francis' stuff is really helping my sanity since I absolutely LOATH the job that I've done on my 9 to 5 stuff, and When I see what could(should) have been I get kinda depressed, so working on stuff that's playful and non pressured is beautiful. I hope to improve myself day to day since it's really competitive out there, and someone can always humble you with a kick-ass piece of 3d work or a painting.

Maybe I should be an Iron Chef?

It rocks! Very good colors. The only thing that bugs me, is the mountainline in the BG, which interferes with the outline of the fuchikoma IMHO. Maybe it could have been raised a bit or taken another angle in places. And I still don't like the chick. Apart from that it makes me drool...

pretty nice color scheme, although I think it has lost its "depth" now. Looks a bit more flat then the original version.
