Here is an updated version of what I used to call the Mountain Troll. I changed it to a Mountain ORC.

As per some previous critiques, I made the orc less shiny, and deepened the shadows. I also defined the rocks better, darkened the sky and added a bit of detail here and there.

I hope you like it as it is my first digital painting ever. I used a combination of Photoshop and Painter...mostly Photoshop though.

Painting took about 6 hours to complete.

I look forward to any comments or crits.

Upper arm, shoulder and leg look awsome. Cary out the rest of the pic to that degree and you'll have yourself one kickass orc.

Work it up more....MORE I TELL YOU!!

A beautifully executed piece. My only comment is the skull next to his face, it seems to be floating in mid-air.

Hey, i like this idea. Hope you dont mind i drew an alternate version, just so you can see another approach to lighting this picture. I didnt redraw anything, all i did was draw over your existing lines. I think the main thing seems like its a little flat, and a great way to make the orc have more shape is to change the lighting a bit... also notice i took out the busyness of the background so it doesnt take away from the focus of the image. The sky is red, so i through in a bit of red throughout, especially in the sword.

hope this was helpful!

These are great. Normally I hate looking at Orcs and fantasy monsters but this actually has me wanting to do one Myself. Good job guys.

JohnC the composition is what does it for me mostly I love it.

Dhabih Really polished it up and made it a little more believeable,

And mOO put it in almost the light I'd expect to see it in if I ran into it in real life.

Thanks Dhabih and mOO. Both pics are very good!

WOW!!! Dhabih, that repaint you did is absolutely amazing! Thats the look I want to achieve on my work. Now thats the kind of Crit that makes a differnece. You've opened my eyes on Lighting and color from what you did.

I like your version 100% more than mine. You are very good. The colors , highlights, shadows and that sword are awesome!

Can I ask what program you used? I have Painter but used Photoshop mostly because I am unsure on using painter at the moment. I just got it.

What brush did you use if you used painter?

Is there any tips you can give me on lighting, shadows and other other things I should know about to improve upon?

Your version almost looks like a frazetta painting.

Well thanks guys, I appreciate it!

You may not get a quick reply from Dhabih, but I believe he still uses Photoshop and the default brushes. I'm pretty sure he hasn't changed that, and if you look close at the strokes you can see how they end. I think he uses the paintbrush tool for the majority and uses the airbrush with dodge/burn on occasion. I'm not 100% sure though.. I've just been on the forum a really long time.

A little thing you may want to try while you are still learning is to paint your pictures in black and white. You can set the shadows and lighting without worrying about the colors. Once the image looks the way you want in B&W add multiply layers and use those to add color to your pic. Play around with using the airbrush set to "screen" at different opacities to do the highlights when your colors are set.
