I started trying to do a self portrait back when that "post your self portrait" thread was around (2 months ago??) and have finally done one that works. Fifth time lucky!

It's not -quite- right (eyes dont totally look like me), but (unfortunately) this image is pretty damn close. It's almost scary.
Reference was from a dark 1x1 inch photo but the lighting was totally made up.

Suggestions on how to make it a better 'painting' will be greedily absorbed.

Row.

I dunno the forehead looks a bit too big, and the eyes doesnt seem to be focusing on the same point. (eh dunno how to express it)
mebbe if you provided the photo, then we could see.

Nice one Sumaleth. I think you got the paintingtechnique nailed pretty well down. So my only advice would be to pay more attention to the individual forms. The nose for example looks a bit crooked. With a little more careful modeling it should be fairly easy to correct. The lips seems to me to a bit to even shaded, the upperlip to plain dark.... The lips do seem a little bit too wide?

hey suma, nice of you to join in on doing portraits. Lookd very nice, though you look dangerous.
I guess what I miss is a bit of the same as boomer said, some more carefully modeled areas, Like the nice..make both material and shape more clear..now the skintone vary because of light, but I think you could put in some more variation on the actual skintone as well. chin vs nose, etc....but nice work....I'm sure it looks like yuo too, since I've seen you do a couple of other that looked very similar proportionalt too.

that's nice, suma. something bothers me about your right eye.. the way the light is hitting it underneith seems a little off. also, it seems as though it's looking off somewhere else. besides that, i like the tones. the touches of grey on the right side are cool.

you look a bit like me 3,4 years ago, before i got a haircut.
I don't think those highlights work for skin, they make your skin look like a metal surface.

Does it really look -that- scary? Maybe it's just the lighting that makes me look scary?

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I expect they're probably all right too. I wish I could post the original photo to show why some things were done the way they are, although I don't think it would help even if I could (too small, too dark).

Joachim; I've used a lot more color variation in the skin this time than I usually do - still not enough?

Anyway, the next one will hopefully be better.

Row.
