Hey, I just got a wacom 4X5 tablet about a week ago and its awesome for coloring but I find it hard to draw my basic layout with. I am wondering how most of you start your drawings? (Do you scan it in or draw it right from the tablet) I am also wondering if you more often then not use reference pictures? Any comments would be great

I'm sure you expected this type of answer. Your prolly just gona have to practice and practice. It will take some getting use to with looking up and down to actually see your picture. Definately give yourself a long time to get the feel for it, couple months a year even.

I've heard some people will trace out a sketch they have done, or a photo. It's all in what feels best for you. Though learning to sketch with out a photo or another paper sketch on a wacom, will only help speed you up. If you have to redraw it twice, that some wasted time, technically.

Keep at it man! I haven't gotton one yet, though I do want one really bad. But I'm saving for a decent sized one. Bills suck me money up I can't wait to find out how bad I do, but that only makes me wana keep at it. I love the life long challege art brings to all of us.

POIT!

A lot of people do scan in pencil and ink drawing, and touch it up and color it with the wacom, this is not a bad way of doing it, IF you have a scanner. However I also agree with jHOF in that it just requires a lot of practice and patience. It took me a while to adjust to using a wacom. But sometimes if I had a nice drawing I did on paper, I would transfer it to photoshop. It's whatever you feel up to.

For my art (mostly cartoony line-art stuff), I scan in a pencil sketch, and then either color it from there, or trace over it and then color.

Just one way of doing it though...

peace,
