Ok, Here is my first Digital Painting. As you can tell I can't paint. This was done freehand with a mouse 100% in Photoshop 5.0. A couple of marquee selections and a line tool was used for the staff, the rest of the picture was standard brushes and the airbrush. No reference was used except for the Dragon (Sorry I could not remember what they looked like). As for the time it took, well it took to long to mention. Comments are needed and welcome. I realize there is problems all over the thing. Let me know what you think, color, comp, anatomy etc.
Thanks

I wish I had the time to touch this up it would not be very hard to make this a kick ass pic. I would darken the background and give the place a dark dreary look. Have like a light shinning down on her. Then put some blood on the mat. You need to sharpen her up with some fine detail and add some dynamic lighting.....it would'nt take long for me...good first pic though..a lot better then my first |

MilkMan- Yeah I agree with all of that. I wanted to get this up before I go to Kosovo tomorrow. I posted a version with the changes that you were talking about below. I only took a few minutes to add the blood and the lighting change they both need to be refined. I will try to work on the fine detail when I get back on Wednesday. I don't know though, I think I am at the limit of my ability.
Thanks!

thats a great picture! with the strong light from above tho, u have to change the shading. under her neck, and stuff like that would be much darker and she would cast a much darker shadow on the floor. and there would b a shine on her hair and stuff.
im not too crazy bout those shoes tho, looks like she's wearing boring old oxfords or something.
thats awesome for ur first try! keep painting!

nightmare- Thanks! Yeah I agree the shading would change tremendously. I did a quick paint over to see what the spotlight would do for the picture. I didn't know what to do with the shoes so I just "tried" to paint the regular slip on black shoes. I didn't take to much time with them and it shows. Thanks again I'll keep trying to come up with some better pic's.
[Shizo]- Yeah, I think she's more like WHASSUP? But, that's just me... Later...
Thanks

This is my first attempt at a quick toutch up, so please excuse me if this looks worse than the original. Tips ? Try to use more colors than one, and try your best to determine the lightsetup, and shade. I like what you've done so far, but soild shading just doesn't seem right for this one.

Hmm. phun
Build a simple model of the arena in 3-d and look at how different camera positions and lens effect your image. I am sure you can find something more dramatic if you play with it. I changed the pose a little bit, but it's messed up too. Ran out of time.
I some cases I flatened out the image for graphic effect, but my eye level is lower than yours. There are many things I like about your image better than mine, but I do these things sometimes with the intention to try things that I know might fail.
One thing is she just whacked someone and the pose and expression is still calm, proportional and symmetrical. This is a story, I have to learn more about story, how to tell it with an image. I should learn to do comics for a few years. humph |

Hey,
Just walked into the office in Kosovo and saw these posts...
--Transcendent-- Yeah you're right about the solid color stuff. I like your post. Thanks...
-Spooge Yeah, you're stuff looks awesome. I have never thought of the 3D model before but I will try it on the next pic. I like your more dramatic pose a lot better than mine, to bad I didn't think of it until you did it... Oh well, such is life...
But speaking of angles I tried to work with the grid from your website to find the perspective of things and I guess I'm not smart enough to figure it out because I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Maybe I'll give it another try when I've had more sleep. Yeah, I like images that tell of a whole life (story) that's happening right as you're looking at them. Unfortunatley I'm no good at telling them.
Thanks for the replies from everyone I'll keep working it...

Pierre- Yeah I like your image very much. I like your choice of lighting. You're right I would not have taken that choice in lighting but only because I would not have thought of it. Thanks for taking the time to give me some good critique.

Fianchetto,
This image look good, i liked the composition. And it also looked very clean, much potential in it, I think. I felt that one could do so much with it. I did a very quick repaint over it today, but after seeing spooges version I should not post this one, but what the heck, it is done and here you go. I am not sure that you would go about this lighting with your image, I think it is kind of radical from what you first intended.
P.S. Spooge, we always manage to get so different interpretations of the same image. I did this before seeing yours. I like the way you changed the perspective alot. Never thought of that, was too much bogged up with the lighting.
