Does anybody know of a good way to emulate water colors? I'm not sure if there is a way in Painter, because I've never used it. PS only has wet edges which doesn't do much for me.

Well...the watercolor brush set in Painter is about as close as you can get.

Paint your image in RGB in PS and use the watercolor filter under artistic but I must add that its better to just paint whatever it is in the medium thats its supposed to be.

Francis: Here is my scenerio. Small apartment... BIG puppy. My PC is the only thing he doesn't get into. I was just wondering if there was a decent alternative to using real watercolors. If not.. oh well.

I just started experimenting and painting some stuff with the wet edges option in PS and I gotta say I quite liked it chapel, Try messing with it some more if u havent used it much.. what gets on my nerves is that glowing outline you get with it tho, anyone know if theres a way to lessen or get rid of that???

Cos: You use a tablet right?Make sure opacity is checked, if you use the paintbrush..I dont get that glowing edge at all. Well I do if I just put down one stroke, but after you've finished a painting you wont see any. My green pirate was made entirely with wet edges. I really like it,it uses another algorythm for the opacity. Makes for a much smoother look.

Cos: alright well it shouldnt be any problem as long as you have your opacity below 100%, I tried it out with the mouse.

CHapel-I have been plagued by the small house big puppy thing. Now I have small space and a big puppy, well dog. Work long enough and they ignore you. Heh
actually, all you need is a 32 oz cup or even a 24, or is it a 28 oz. cup. I need to get a job at 7-11 to figure this out, and put it aside on the table top or even in a cup holder, dont matter. Then go buy an 8.5 x 11 watercolor book/art pad. They are really handy. I am using one alot now that is a 6" x 9" pad that can be tucked into my 900 lb. backpack...get tube water colors, and a small metal mixing tray, 7 x 9 I think is the smallest sold. Dick Blick on line has everything you need and fairly cheap too.
This is the way I travel sketch. There are even small water color box easels that are really cool, I want one but don't get out enough right now to use it effectively, so I am waiting till summer. BUt that thing folds up and all you need again is a cup for water.
IMHO there is no real substitute for the real thing. I have been using the watercolor tools in painter, and I still like the real deal better.
That's my 2 cents.

I would go the real thing. It's a different style, I don't think that a computer can even come close at this stage.

As Fred said you can do it with a small setup.

It may not look EXACTLY like watercolor, but if you set your brush to low opacity, and just paint like you would watercolor, it can look pretty nice.

Binke, yeah I've been using opacitys on around 50% and 100%,
so I'll have to remeber not to have it totally full, thanks man.

Thanks Fred. I'll keep that in mind. Any suggestions on a brand that I should pick up? Anybody familiar with Dr. Martin? I think that is the brand. Actually, any tips at all would be helpful. I really haven't played around with real watercolors before. My father uses oil, so that is the only medium I'm really familiar with.

Dr. Martin inks are what most colorist/illustrators used to for coloring quick illustrations that required very bright colors. However, they fade VERY quickly, so this is not the sort of medium you'd want to use for anything that requires longevity.

Thanks Chris. I'll scratch those off of my list. Klaus Janson was the one who told me to use those. That was when digital coloring was just starting though.
