I scanned in a sketch I did and cleaned it up into a lineart image. However, I can't get her face right. I checked back in previous posts for tutorials involving heads but unfortunately a lot of the images are broken. Not only that, but it's seems to focus on male heads. Whenever I tried to follow along with the tutorial, my girl came out quite masculine in appearance. :/

I think another very large problem is that I don't quite understand how to place facial features onto the face. I can do all these things fine from a photo reference most of the time, but I can't do it out of my head. Even if I DID figure out how to put the features in the right spots, I am quite sure that I wouldn't know how to shape the features to represent various emotions.

Anyways, here is the image:

Oh and I'm looking to do a dominating, serious, "don't mess with me" look.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jez

i don't think i'll b of much help (i draw anime style, so my realistic proportion might be off) but i'll try my best

*takes a deep breath* eyes go in the middle of the head, bottom of nose about 3/4 of the way down, hairline 1/4, mouth between bottom of nose and tip of chin(duh). heads generally about 5 eyes wide, nose is 1 eye wide(which is also the space between the eyes), mouth corners go from pupil to pupil. *phew*

if ur girls r looking a bit manly, check out the mouth and eye areas. girl's eyes are much less deep set than guy's. eyebrows r less bushy/thinner. the mouth is usually fuller, but try to stay away from the collagen implant look. if all else fails, u can make the jaw less square... or u can stare at ur face and study the structure and stuff, compare it with a guy's... if u could post a pic of what u mean by the manly girl's face then it would be easier to see the problem

i like that action pose btw!

it's all a conspiracy!

hi Jezebel,
Well i hope this helps.
i draw alot of faces and i draw alot of body's but not placed onto each other so my problem is basically the same as yours.
what i learnt is that you should map out the face but first thing is ... think 3d. draw elipses on the face as the face bends and everything the outline of the face and the 3d will give you a little bit more understanding of how your face should look the outside lines of the face make the face inside .. if you have a rough outline your face inside will be manly and muscular. no matter what u do the face will follow the contours of the outline.
do this and the start drawing darker line where the eyes should be .. the eyes are the keystone to a succesfull face.

Contact me when u have recieved this and read this i want to see what u think of it.
thx alot

nightmare - Thanks for the measurements, I can never remember those things. And I'm glad you like the pose! I think it would look much better if it were colored real nice in PS

ArMaDoN - What you said is well put. Do you happen to know of any resources where I can find out about doing eyes and facial expressions?

Yay, she has a face!

I had to look at tons and tons of photos of women to try and get this right though. I guess it still looks a little goofy but it's better than nothing

I don't figure anyone is even looking at this thread but if they are, crits and comments are always welcome ^_^

i think you nailed that face.. good job.

crit: Dont you think we should see alttle bit of her left arm? Maybe part of the elbow or something..

ok here is what i now about the diffrence between male female faces that hasn't been covered yet.

If you messure from the cornor of the eye to the back of the ear, that distance should be the same from the same conor of the eye too the bottom of the jaw (for men), on a women the disntace to the jaw is a little shorter.

ok here is a reefrence image..

hope this helped
