Ok boy and girls,
Dust off your mouse pads, wipe off your tablets and let's have a contest. I have decided to host a fun little contest on the forum for real $$$$.
Ok, I'm not Christopher Ramsey , but I am offering a $10.00 prize for the best hyperrealism/superrealism image using the image below (to clarify..hyper/superrealism was a movement by artists to create the most realist image possible using photos and ultra large canvas. They were going for an image more real than the camera could provide) . Two categories will be used, one for wacom tablets and one for mouse entries (to keep the advantage fair for those without pens) Each cat. winner will recieve the 10 bucks. The prize will be sent to you via snailmail (if you win, please email me your address since most people are nervous about posting personal info online) in moneyorder form and btw I would like the 2 winners to post scans of the money order to validate their winnings (again, edit out your name and addy to protect yourself if you wish).
I would like Spooge, Fred, and Liquid to judge the contest since I believe them to be the best on the forum.
Here are the rules..(aren't their always rules)...
1. Each entry must be recieved/posted by Dec. 31, any late entries will be disqualified.
2. The image may not be manipulated via filters to try and fool the judges, which in my opinion would be hard indeed.
3. The contestants must place only one post, please do not rack up 10 accounts under different names, let's be honest here.
That's it for the rules (don't like them anyway)
Ok, Fred..Spooge...Liquid..if you guys have the time let's have some fun.
Here is the image and why I chose it.

I found this image randomly on the web and thought it would be challenging and at the same time not to hard for the youngins out there, plus metals are fun to do IMO.
For those interested reply with Aye! and we will let the games begin...Good Luck!!!!

I think the contest would be better if you didn't have people just copy a picture...that takes almost no skill at all. Just picking colors from one area and painting them in another..

At least make it so the idea/theme is incorporated into the picture, but is not an exact replica.

First off let me say to that I didn't regard this contest as useless. And Snake I would prefer Spooge and Fred to send me feedback and not a third party on their behalf, but at the same time I read the thread and understand where you are coming from. But your attitude was about it was completely out of line and if you don't to be a part of it, then that's your choice.
Liquid, I've seen your work and I would be more than honored for you to judge the entries.
Ok, it seems that the replies so far lean toward changing the lighting, etc as to not copy directly from the image. But from my understanding that is what hyperealism is, if i'm wrong I'll go back to art school and start all over. But I will relax the rules:
I want the ship to be as realistic as possible, but I will allow the lighting to be changed and i.e. changing it into a night-time scene instead of day etc. But I don't want the image altered in such a way that it takes away from the concept. And even if it doesn't take artistic ability to recreate the photo, it would take a good deal of photoshop/painter skills to pull it off.
And if everyone else thinks this is a useless contest, then I will be glad to trash it and forget the whole thing.
Thanks for the input, and Snake lighten up, it's all in fun, not a soul saving process.

Ok, I admit that it may sound easy to just copy the image by picking colors from one area and painting them in another, but believe me it's not that easy. Hyperealism is just that, exactly replicating what the eye sees to the point of photography, and that will be no easy task. Try it and you'll see it's harder than it seems. The idea here is trompe l'oeil, to fool the eye into believeing that it is the photograph. I will leave the idea as it is. Besides, there are some here that are just getting started in digital painting I would like to give them some advantage as well. As soon as I get some feedback as to whether the judges have the time, and I get enough willingly participants, I will begin the show.

Another note: The images will indeed show diversity, as everyone will go about this at a different angle and that is where the judging comes in...To see who can closest recreate the image. If it where left up to each individual artist taste and style, then the idea of hyperealism would be lost completely. The idea is to have fun and make some pizza money at the same time. If you can recreate the image with just pick and paint techniques, by all means do it. It will be left up to the judges to decide.
Happy painting and good luck!

You should really study the history of this message board before posting any other useless contest.

http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/Forum2/HTML/005520.html

Fred and Spooge give away a ton of info and personnal thoughts regarding photo copying, and I must say if you read what they say in that thread, you will most likely think "Hrmm, I think they won't want to be judges."

How the hell did you include me with Spooge and Fred?! I'm flattered, but I'm nowhere near their skill... I'm hanging out here to hopefully soak up some of their wisdom.

Personally, I think copying a photo is great practice because it oftentimes makes you think about areas of interest and technique that you may have otherwise ignored. However, Just copying this image exactly sounds a bit boring to me. Why not relax the rules a bit. Either leaving it open to change the angle slightly, or time of day, or overall lighting, as long as it looks realistic?

Just my useless thoughts on the matter.

Rag,

I am surprised that you are putting forth this contest. This seems to contradict your earlier post (that was very well written and accurate, I thought) that doing this kind of thing hurt your development.

I also would have to disqualify myself as a judge. I swore off judging after the last fiasco. My opinions on things are not shared by many. Have a simple vote, if anything.

I also vote to have the subject opened up. Artic setting, trapped ship for months sitting in the ice. People have moved out of the ship. The ice has crushed the hull. Cannibalism has started.... Neat idea.

You're right, it was unfair of me to post so early. Next time I'll leave the best for last.
