If it's loading slow try: http://xploitzero.tripod.com/images/norsemanstudy2.JPG
Well seeing as I'm scrapping my old comic (it was going nowhere fast) and it's early enough to do so anyway, here are some character concepts for the new comic I'll be working on.
The one in the upper left hand corner is the only one I've named so far (King Kolskegg the White). I doodled that one at work today with a ball point pen.
The bottom middle one is my first real attempt at any kind of portrait with the tablet (it's from 13th Warrior DVD. I don't have the photoreference because I can't cap a DVD screen >:[} The face tat on the bottom right one is also inspired by 13th Warrior.
The others are out of my warped brain and are attempts to design a main character. Also, the reason there's only one woman is because I'm sure she's the one I'm gonna use. I found the look I wanted right away.
Any crits/comments/suggestions/ideas?

As par usual, this mini-masterpiece is going in my Flexible Elf directory LOL! Those sketches are so unique they are awesome. The girl reminds me of Jessica Alba (dark angel series on FOX). I think its the big lips that do it. Nummy! The sketch to the left of her is just Friggin AWESOME.
The portrait on the bottom.....*drops his jaw*.... wow. I've never seen artwork from you like that, its awesome! I'd love to see a piece entirely done in this style im sure it would look awesome!
The guy on the bottom right has like an american indian/nordic style with that tattoo across his face, makes him very unique. The guy on the bottom left... looks great, but the only thing is that he looks a little too plain. he's basically just a guy with long hair... hrmm.... ok.... maybe do something a little diff too him so he isnt so plain? scars on his face? tattoo? face jewelry? just a thought.

thats some awesome stuff there elf, the two characters in the center are my faves (chick and 13th warrior guy). Your stuff in the comic was good, but if these character concepts are any indication of the quality of this next comic, this forum is in for a real treat.
can't wait to see this thing come to life.. oh, btw, do you happen to remember what part of the 13th warrior dvd you did that portrait from? I bought that dvd a couple months ago to sketch from and I'd be interested in takin a look at the actual video sequence you referenced for that portrait... |

Whoa, that's good stuff. I really like your style Flex, I've admired/jealously envied your work for a while, and this goes into that second category.
I dig the whole Viking deal, I was working on a pic of Ragnar from RUNE, but I became ashamed of myself and set it aside. There's some good wallpapers and conceptual stuff from that game on the web if you're looking for ideas/inspiration.
Also, I read Eaters of the Dead a couple times, but I never caught The 13th Warrior. Good flick? I should probably rent it.
Well, enough ramble from me, this all looks great. Oh yeah, if you're looking for a main character, I'd avoid the guy on the upper right- he looks a little more like a Viking sword-swallower, if you catch my drift. Not that there's anything wrong with that! Later.

heh thanks guys.
MaLoRuM: Jessica Alba was a big part of the inspiration for her.
Striker: The part of the movie is when the guy (Olaf I think) says, "Women, Children. Barely a man between 15 and 50."
Sacrelicious: Yeah you should definitely see the flick. From what I hear the movie follows the book almost identically. And 10-4, the guy on the upper right is right out.

I just wanted to say that I like a lot what you do, Flexible Elf. I'm not really into viking stuff, so no comments from me.
Very nice.

That pen drawing looks fantastic. Scraped the old comic? heheh that's a familiar line I hope you get something you like going with the next one. If you get it right it could really start to happen.

Nice sketches Flex! Especially like the King Kolskegg sketch and that swift look of it. The girl and the guy in the bottom look little stiff and plain to me. The two in the right(up/down) could make very interesting characters. I like the portrait also.
About the film: I liked the overall feeling and implementation but the plot was quite boring I think. |

Very nice characters, like always! Though I have to agree with Rhomb about the girl and the guy looking a little plain. Don't know your intention on them, but on this concept page they seem to lack that viking-esque touch of the other charas. No, it's not just that they have no beard (especially concerning the girl! hehe).
Keep posting these cool drawings, it always urges me to get better! |

Id have to say the top right fella would be my fave from all of these. The others are wunderbar too of course but that one seems most viking-ish to me. Id like to see more of the woman, not for some pervse reasons hehe, but just to get a better look at her, right now she just doesnt look like she belongs with the rest of the theme.
great stuff!

Thanks again for the comments guys.
I'll work on a second wave of sketches and they'll be full body ones.. more true character concepts. I want to capture a Norse feel without the typical horned-helm stuff for the main character(s)

Very nice work, very nice indeed.
I don`t like the girl, and the boy/man in the bottom left corner. Both of them don`t have a viking/norseman feel to them.
The girl reminds me of the youngest of the girls in Party of Five, I have no idea what her name is...
May I ask what made you decide on the name King Kolskegg the White???? I`m Norwegian, and have no idea what Kolskegg is or means or anything....

hey superbug... yeah like I said in another post I'll work on some more full-body ones, more true character concepts.
pierre: Glad you like! Feel free to render away
Thomas: The girl is actually going to be an outlander. She's not from the north.. as for the man/boy I think you're right. Also, Kolskegg is just a name that stood out on a list of Viking names I found on the internet, not sure as to the meaning of it, but "the white" just represents the stark white of his hair and signifies his age and wisdom.

I saved your faces to my harddrive and will soon start to work on them.
Please let me know if there is any particular image you would like me to render.

Elf, those are great. Definitely my kind of stuff. I would try pushing the facial proportions here and there a tad, to create destinctive looks for the characters; as of now, they look like general designs, as if for a crowd scene or style guide. If that's your intention, then I apologize.
I really love these though. Except for the one in the top left, it looks like they're for animation. Yes? No? |

excellent pics, flex! i especially like the top three characters. imho the bottom left and right chars look a little too american-indian to be vikings...
i think my favorite is the top-left, he just looks like a complete badass. it took me a while to figure out who he reminds me of but i finally got it: anyone else thinks he looks a lot like the main sidekick in "braveheart?"
thank god you did not go with horns. vikings did NOT have horns! that's just a bunch of hollywood bs. on the other hand, most if not all males had beards that they took good care of. vikings were pretty vain, in general... the men actually wore a sort of green-ish eyeshadow (eyeliner?), and everyone wore lots of jewelry. i have read a lot on vikings, and used to operate a rather large viking web site. but anyway, i'm straying off topic...
i thought the 13th warrior was a pretty decent flick... certainly entertaining. but keep in mind that the characters were not meant to be vikings, but rather of a pseudo-norse persuasion. (did that make any sense?)
either way, excellent work flex! hope to see the finished work soon!

Hi Elf!
these are great drawings.Especially the old guy on the top left. I love that sketch. I dont care for the girl though, she looks dead and I think there is something wrong with her head
body connection something looks a little strange.
cheers

pierre: Whichever one you like =]
Joachim: Thanks =]
Weeks: Doh sorry! Cool stuff. How do you like Painter?
Gambit: Glad you like!
Jenn: The first page will be done early this week. I was going to do it this weekend but I got sidetracked.
AliasMoze: Yeah they're totally generic now. I just wanted to get an idea for the style I wanted to use. It's not for animation though, I just have a cartoony style.
yggdrasil: Yeah I think the horns are pretty overused and pretty stereotypical. When I think of vikings, the first thing I think of is Animal hide boots and clothing, long facial hair and braids. My vikings won't be totally historically accurate look-wise, but they also won't be over the top.. and I think I'll pass on the eyeshadow. Maybe a dab of warpaint Gonna be real gritty.
Ecki: yeah I was pretty damn sure I was going to use her for sure but I have some other ideas swimming around.
sorry if I missed someone

Is there a serton style you are going to do this in? From the look of the sketches it looks as if you havn't picked one yet. I duno.
But what ever style you choose I think thay kick not just ass but big hipo ass. They make me want to draw. I realy like them.
Good concepts.

Rad, a Creedance Clearwater Revival reunion tour, but who's the girl?
Awesome sketches Flexible Elf. The girl looks sassy, like she don't take crap from nobody. Nice characters overall. Well done!
