Hi!

Well, it's taken me a while, but I've got that faeries image almost
finished (probably nobody remembers it). I don't have
much time to draw now, so it takes me like forever to finish something
(lame excuse).

Anyway, I'm really tired of this image so I'm not gonna work on it
anymore. It's the second colored image I do without reference ever
since I was 14 or 15 (a looooooong time ago) and it's really been
a pain in the ass.

Now, it's time for you to criticize it, it's got a lot of
errors so it should be a piece of cake for you to destroy it (anatomy,
composition, lightning, whatever...). Hopefully, I won't do the same
errors on my next drawings (yeah, sure ).

One last note: maybe they don't really look like traditional faeries,
it's only my twisted vision of them.

Thanks.

Liquid!: Wow! Thanks! I can really see what you mean! Yeah, there's no focus or anything on my original picture, mostly due to the fact that I worked on small things on difereny days (excuses, excuses ...). I should have planned it better, but even if I did, I really doubt I could have done anything half as good as what you've done with it in just a "mock-up".

You really captured the mood I was looking for, it's really helpful, thanks again!

Now my version looks really ugly , but that's ok , I'll work harder next time .

This is one of my first colored pieces, so when it comes to color something, I just don't have a clue, and follow my cheating instinct.

btw, sorry about my english.

Badass

Hey, Only problem I have with either image, is the bottom right girl...
I just wish she was in a more action pose, as opposed to a superman dive...

if you fix that...it's a RRRROOOCKIN image !

ooooh, evil faeries. nice

It's good to see the finished product of those faerie sketches you did, although I have to say the energy and freshness you had in the sketches is mostly lost in the painting. It's always damn hard to get those effects in a tighter, more finished piece though.

Holy shit Liquid!
That kicks ass! The difference is amazing! Don't waste this opportunity Grendel, put what liquid has shown you together with your own work and see what you can come up with.

Jeez...Nice work man! That's really original, and creative! I really like the expression on the face of the one holding the eyeball...she seems to be saying "HEH HEH HEH mother f(*&!%!!" -- I like Liquid's touch-up too, because it gives them more of a glow...The only thing I could possibly add as far as a critique/suggestion, would be motion blur on the faeries wings...They've often been portayed as having to flap extremely fast (like small insects or humming birds) to stay aloft, so it might add some atmosphere, or scale, to make their wings blurred; ie: buzzing.

Looks very very nice!
I'd like to see some more vegetation on the ground and more work put into the tree trunks (the coloring makes the background look flat).

The glow liquid! added looks good, too.

I think you did a nice job on this piece. There are some small things about the anatomy of the fairies that bother me [like the butt being a bit to flat on the top left one], but nothing too major.

I think my main criticism would be that I think that this piece lacks a bit of focus in terms of coloring. I tried to center the attention above the guy on the ground as well as grouping items in terms of color, and trying to add a bit more motion and drama with some lighting.

I did a quick mock-up with some tweaks, I'm sure others here could do much better. I hope I didn't take too many liberties and that the general idea comes across. Mostly, I hope its helpful.

Thank you all for your kind comments!

Anthony_J: hmmm, maybe I could twist her body a little so it doesn't look so static.

rdgraffix: I agree, I like those sketches better. What I'm trying to do is learn to paint in a similar level as my line drawings, and get better at line drawing too.
I'll probably work on it some more time, thanks to Liquid! .

Visigoth: Thanks, I'll try that buzzing thing.

Gecko: more vegetation ... damn! It takes me a lot of time to do vegetation. Well, all I need is patience then ...

hey dr. bang, thanks a lot, but I really hope you're either kidding or refering to Liquid's version!

I'd love to see Spooge redo it too, but we all like to see anything he does, don't we?

eep!! I remember those sketches! They've actually inspired me some, Grendel!

I love the original painting.. thats really great. Tho I have to agree, it lost some of its excitement from the drawings. But thats ok, its still a great pic.

And Liquid, your fricken amazing. One could learn much from observing your coloring.

Update! I actually worked on the image. It still has lots of errors (the guy's arm is ... jeez!) and still needs a lot of work, but i think i'll get mad if i stare at the painting five more minutes, so i consider it finished.

I want to give a big thank you to Liquid! for his advice and to everybody else who's commented anything on this thread as well as on the preliminary sketches of the fairies. I couldn't make that buzzing thing work tho, sorry .

Here's the final version:

Of course, any comments are welcome, i'd like to hear what you think about it .

PD: Liquid!, I'll upload your overpainting on my site if you don't mind, so i can show how it helped.

Very nice....huge improvement over the original (although the original was great as well). Overall, awesome.

You're from Barcelona I see...so you speak both Catalan and Castellano?

Le gusta dibujar solo con la computadora, o con medio tradicional tambien?

(Sorry, just speaking in Spanish is somewhat fun )

Looks great! I'm glad you went back over it, it would have been a shame not to!

You're more than welcome, I'm really happy I was able to help you. Feel free to do with the image as you wish.

Amazing drawing, only one thing i advise you to change the right arm of the guy layin on the ground cause it looks like he's on a hill.
Just my 2 cents.

Khan, While I would never try to pretend that I know that much about color, I've spent a bit of time on layout for comics. It works like this: Essentially, a still image or comic panel is the equivalent of a keyframe in animation. So every character or object in a scene should have a since of "dynamic place" (whatever the hell that means:-) So for example the faerie with the eyeball could perhaps fly at an angle that emphasizes motion away from the background. In 2d animation they call it line of motion. Also poses are important. It's a rule of thumb that I have used for many years to fairly good success. Of course the color part screws it up again:-) In the image I put some lines of motion. Of course don't even think of asking me if the perspective is right:-) Regards

Whoa, excellent pic Grendal really nice.
I love the fairy in the top left corner, very nice.
Dreddawg, thanks for your advice, I'd never thought of that. I love this forum.

One thing I would like to say Grendal, it's something that kind of catches my eye, is the pose of the fairy in the bottom right. The perspective's a little wrong and her upper body looks too short.
Excellent scene though, love it.

Cheers,

Glad you liked it!

TheMilkMan: Thanks. yeah, Liquid helped a lot.

Void: Yes, i speak both catalan and spanish (don't try to make me speak english tho). Contestando a tu pregunta, prefiero dibujar tradicionalmente .

Liquid!: i HAD to go back at it, thank you again.

Dark_Thorn: i know, i know, that guy's anatomy is all wrong, and the arm is specially weird. bah, next time i'll take more care . Is this your firt post? Welcome to the forum!

dreddawg: I see what you mean. I wanted to have her face looking directly at the viewer, so i choose this frontal view. Maybe it wasn't a good idea. btw, i think the prespective on your drawing is ok , thanks!.

garthmidgley: thanks, i think her head is too big, that makes her upper body look short (uh, isn't that the same thing? ). As for the prespective, i dunno, i like it this way, they're flying in different directions, but probably it would look better if she were more horizontal.
