Ok, I upgraded to Photoshop 6 and it's nice and fine overall, but there's something very wrong with dodge. If I try to make a dodge layer, it doesn't work at all like I'd expect from previous versions, and even my old files that use dodge layers open looking completely wrong.

Surely it's not possible that Adobe would have changed the way dodge works with no warning or notice at all? So I'm thinking there's something very wrong with my Photoshop setup, I just can't figure out what it could possibly be.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yo sfr!

Believe it or not,
but Adobe really changed the way 'color dodge' works in version 6. They are even saying that the way it worked in the previous
versions was a 'bug'(eg. going from zero to
maximum). I was so sad when I noticed that they have changed it because all my art made in earlier versions are now destroyed,
since I'm using 'color dodge' to get the hyper realistic light effects.
If Adobe could just have put in like a 5.x
option in the layer effects options, so it
would be possible to have it work like before
=~(
I've found there is a way to make it work somewhat like before but it's not possible to get the exact
results back.
Try the following:
If you want to work with 'color dodge' as a layer effect add it as usual, then double click the layer to bring up the layer effect options. once you're there drag the 'Opacity' slider (in the Advanced Blending area) down to 50%. You can now use say the airbrush and
paint on the layer to get an effect like you
are used to with the exeption that you cen't get it to add in value as you used to before =~(
There is however one more way of getting the good ol effect to work in a very crippled way and that is to NOT use it on a new layer.
You have to paint with 'color dodge' mode on the brush directly on the layer containing the pixels you want to modify =((((
As you can see this will stop any intuitive
creation dead right there.
Hope I've managed to help you a little.
I just wish there was some way to bring back my old artwork to life again though.
Well, there is ofcourse the option to NOT use
Photoshop 6 at all and install good ol 5.0 again. Guess I'll do that the coming weekend.

Take care.

Whaaaat??? I can't believe Adobe would screw users like this (Or maybe I can, their past record has some indications of similar behaviour...)

It's even more stupid considering that the "buggy" (who had a problem with it anyway?!) dodge layer implementation is present in After Effects, so now they've broken essential file compatibility between their own apps and made my life that much more complicated. Way to go Adobe, I'm glad I kept a working v5 installation...

Maybe I should try to return the v6 package and get the money back.

From what it seems only Adobe has had a problem with it. Havn't heard any user
complain about how the layer mode used
to work =(
On a side note, 'other' programs that uses
similar modes still has it working 'the right'(the way we want it) way

Yeah, would be interesting to see how many
people will actually keep their 5.x versions
instead of paying the upgrade, waiting for
a patch that fixes their screwup.

Damn Adobe. They set up standards and then change everything, hotkeys, you name it.... but this?? This is totally absurd and rediculous. I am NOT upgrading to 6. Screw them.

Everything I've heard about v6 I haven't liked, and each new bit of news is worse than the last! I think it's Photoshop v6.66 from hell...
no upgrade for me.

I'm really disapointed in the direction photoshop is taking these days. They seem to be focusing on wizards and gizmos and other useless crap (as if web graphics are the only thing anyone uses photoshop for) and they refuse to add any new ways to edit images.

Photoshop used to be streamlined and optimized back when some guy at ILM invented it (I think I'm remembering that right) and now it's getting to be bloated and useless.

I'm just gonna stick with 5.5 for now. I'll also hope that at some point someone with a head on their shoulders over there at Adobe will wise up and realize that some need an image editor/creator not a fricking carnival ride.

I got myself a Dual P3 800EB with MSI 694d Pro motherboard and the latest BIOS drivers 1.5, and installed PS6, thinking "Hey, I got plenty CPU speed I can spare for slow PS6!" and I tried to paint with the "new" hotkeys and interface, but it's just impossible.

PS6 is just so slow! I mean, it's slower than on a MAC, but Adobe succesfully made it slower by adding tons of features that interact with each other. Is it really necessary? When I hit the CTRL-Z (which I do all the time), it takes a hundred more milliseconds! I mean, that time counts!

Also, in Win2k and the current wacom drivers, the pen looses it's opacity stylus anytime it wants! So I brush, brush, brush, and then POP, Photoshop decided no more opacity stylus, back to 100% opaque brush for you! (well on my computer at least..)

So goodbye PS6 I regretted pirating and hello back PS5 that rules the planet!

snake grunger - Yes it's alittle slower. I also experienced what you mention about the stylus loosing opacity. I use NT4 servicepack6 and udating my drivers for the tablet solved the problem. You might notice that PS6 has much better pressure control than version 5....

I had this stylus opacity problem too, i upgraded to the latest wacom drivers (mid october) and now all is fine, and i really like ps6

the right click + shift to brign the brushes shapes is just awesome for me i think, but i agree its mainly the only new thing i really like in ps6, but it is so good
