Hi, I'd just like to say you guys have been a great help improving my work and I thank you in advance to any help I may recieve in the future. This is a great place for artists to show among their peers and I'm glad to see the level of professionalism and also self-restraint shown by this group.
I sketched and painted this image in photoshop using a mirror next to my computer in about four hours.
Thanks
-Skeez

Looks great skeez, only thing i wanna point out is the ear, i think its alittle to smugged up, i think you could block it in better , and give more depth to it, right now it looks like u just glued it on the side of your face.
I think the trapezius could be alittle more ruff, right now its kinda just smugged upwards to much.
the hair kinda sticks out funny to me, but im not sure about it.
all in all, i think this peice is great man! I really dig the colors youve used on the face and the reflections on your glasses.
LOOKS SOLID! keep it up
(i dont mean to sound harsh btw if i did ) |

Since I've been coming to this forum I have noticed several people have taken a stab at doing their self-portrait. So I figured I would make an attempt at mine as well... so I've been working on it today. Then you come and post your self-portrait and make me wanna scrap mine. Damn it you guys make me so jealous
Looks GREAT.

Looks good. Other than the ear it's great.
I really like the rich skintones you used, they go nicely with the blues. Great image!

shiny..
very impressive! i love the lighting you used on the whole image. the secondary source coming from somewhere adds some nice depth, too. looks great with the occasional white highlight here and there.. 'specially the glasses.
i'm wondering about the ear, too. perhaps if you shadowed more and used less strokes it would help a bit. yeh, the lines in the hair would look better thinned out a little, maybe by painting over with darker 1pt lines.
my three cents.

Thats friggin awesome! holy shizat!
I love the detail, you got it right down too the monitor shine in your glasses LOL! great!
only thing that stuck out too me is the very bottom left of your neck theres a tiny section on the outline of your neck where it meets the background that just seems a little rough to me, OK thats just being nit picky cuz the picture just SWAMPS MOPS AND KICKS butt!

Great job! I agree with the previous posts, although I do think you did a great job on this piece. Nice job on capturing the lighting!
I would just point out that your nose is pointing in a slightly different direction than your face.
Otherwise, awesome!

You did a good job here in shading (love the glasses shading you did, it adds really a 3D depth feeling to your image!) One thing though your facial skin looks a bit too lustry, as if you applied some vaseline on your neck, nose and forehead. But, maybe that's something you just like to do ? haha, just joking Overall image is very well polished and done, light sources are well emulated!
All these nice self-portraits make me want to draw myself too, because hey, I don't suck!
BTW: How'd you get to draw your face in a "not looking forward" angle? Theoredically, if you were looking at a mirror, your face is supposedly facing torwards. Maybe I am wrong? Fill me in on what you did. |

Wow, people really like self-portraits. I guess we all wanna know what we all look like. haha.
Malorum: You're right that's the monitor. haha, thought it would be cool to maintain the lighting. It had kind of a neat effect.
Okay, I think a little plastic surgery is in order for my ear. I definitely need to block it in better.
Liquid: Thanks for the tip, I forgot to flip the image, I usually do that. It always makes the little mistakes more obvious. I agree, I think the base of my nose, I think its called the septum, is pointing the wrong direction.
SnakeGrunger: actually I do enjoy wiping vaseline on my forehead and nose, oh don't forget the lip gloss too. hehe. Well seriously, I thought of it as an effect more for style, but maybe it looks to pretty-boy. (which I'm not, I swear.)haha
I managed to do the angle by looking out of the corner of my eyes. I stayed looking at the computer screen because it was easy to maintain that angle without screwing it up everytime I looked at the mirror.
Thanks you guys.

The reason I'm putting it here is because I don't have to start a new thread, hope you don't mind!
I'm really hesitant to do this but I'm hoping someone can offer me some tips on how to improve this image. Self portraits have got to be my all time weakest area - I really hate doing these things. That's the reason I chose to do it though...
My biggest problem is the fact that well.. the picture looks nothing like me!
Oh and I also sorta cheated, I don't have a portable mirror so I had to make do with a photograph. But I guess I need to start somewhere. Here's the link to the image I worked from:
http://div.dyndns.org/beth/original.jpg
I know that there are many parts of this drawing that are out of place but I can't quite put my finger on what I did to make me look so un-me.
Help would REALLY be appreciated.

Oh, and one more question: Sorry if this something that's been asked a lot but I'm wondering how everyone gets that oil paint look to their images?
Specific brushes? Colors? Technique?
If there is a previous thread which has discussed this already then just point me in the right direction

I did a quick repaint. You can take it or leave it as is. I just dont have time to type up everything I would like to type so painting it I think is just easier for me. I only spent about 15 minutes on this and I probably depicted someone else completely after the repaint, I wish you guys has images to post with the self portraits. Then I could look structurally at what went wrong besides the obvious ./
In this case, the obvious include the ear, the sterno muscle, the tilt on the nose, and the spacing of the eyes. And the glass frames nd hair painting technique.
For the hair, think big shapes and masses. Hair that close to your scalp will actually take on the shape of the skull, so your values should depict the planes the top of your skull make. Think big masses though and not individual strands.
For the glass frames, try to imply them rather than paint them so specifically. Look at Sargent and Sorollay portraits for this. THey should also not be so black. If they are that black, you no longer have a color that you can accent the darker shapes with. Find some neutral greyish color, one that is already used in the image. that will begin to help it. Then use the accented highlights to define the other parts of the frames. THe ones you painted seem too cartoony in their modelling.
Highlights on the face define changes of planes. The highlights you used in the forehead were a bit spotty. THey actually are one larger mass.
And the sterno muscle was to filleted with colors rather than reading as a solid mass.
I apologize if I have destroyed your image in attempting explanation. Go ahead and cut off my hands ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Hey Fred sorry dude but the other guys version looks better then yours! I dont like how you took out the detailed fetures and made it look less like a pianting by toning down the brush strokes..it lokks more digital in your version |

Icannon ..I did read what he was saying but from my point of view it looked better before. I know he was pointing out flaws and what not but art isnt always about accuracy..to me the first version is what looked better..that is my opnion..I guess I cant have one huh? I also know the guy was looking for suggestions .....so don't get your panties in a wade! |

Eh & ah...
Great piece Skeezer and you should be proud of your work.
Fred speaks as I cannot even begin to think. Listen and learn! And I don't mean this as an offense to you or anyone else...
The Wordsmith that I am not, I loved
your piece from the get-go and still do.
Initially my troubles (like I know what is what) were with the hair-line and eyebrows and their transition into the face (should be more subtle with finer hair), but you've done a good job of rectifying that. I also thought that the shirt collar was a distraction, but until Fred's explanation, I wasn't sure why. Now I feel it ties in well (insert pun here). The highlight on the glasses along with the ambient/reflective light upon the lips are an added bonus...
Keep up the good work and inspiration!
SS
Per your revision, where did your tan go and your whiskers come from?
p.s.
My brothers nose has been broken so many times, I'm not sure what direction it'll be facing next time I see him
Excellent job!
Cheers!
