We were at the Hooverphonic show a few nights ago, and after I got home I wanted to try to paint something like it.

But the lighting is fake, the people are cartoony and I am bored with this. Someone please put this out of my misery.

By the way, this isn't meant to be Hooverphonic specifically. No way I needed the additional complication of trying to get the likenesses right...

THAT KICKS ASS!

I really dig the lighting, how'd you do that?

That guitar playing chick is hot. I really like this pic, good atmosphere.

I would suggest however, that you put a little more movement into the lead singer. Everyone else is rocking out, and she's just kinda standing there.

hey, great picture though, very coooool!

Wow, Francis, great job. You've definitely captured the mood with the lighting. I think the stylized lighting realy fits with the stylized subject matter.
Compositionally, the bottom two corners seem to be begging for some action. A crowd, perhaps?

whow!

why change anything? The lighting looks very stylish (even if this was not your intention it looks very cool as it is).

for the singer looking stiff: maybe she is just waiting for the bass player to her left to finishe her 4:12 minute slap-bass solo and is getting annoyed (tz tz tz those singers..)

Hey Francis, that's some nice work! It really gave me a good feeling when I first saw it!

I would guess that the character shapes are a bit too cartoony, which gives off that feeling. The lighting in the scene could maybe use a bit more deeper analysis, with harder shadows when light is occluded by another object. Multiple lightsources will cast multiple intersecting shadows (fun!) on the ground and such. Not an totally easy thing to draw this, but you did a very good job!

I think that you're using very limited values, which gives it a cartoony look. You're also adding a radiosity effect even on hidden surfaces(ie; the top of the right hand guitarist's shoulder, under the hair). I think you were using your concept art pallette on this one. :] I spent a couple minutes messing with it. looks worse though. ^_^ Just having fun at your expense Francis; hope yer don't mind.

francis i really like your painting style on this one! probly my fav or your painted stuff, u have improved alot man..

I think the girl in the middles arms and shoulders look a little too chunky tho, and her legs look more cartoony than the rest of her, like really small knees and bulgy calfs and thies, makes her look a little different style to the rest of the pic.. I like the style of the woman on the right more..

not meaning to bitch on it, its a phat piece man. I hope u do more stuff in this style!

Aha... I thought this was micke's thread... it's refreshing to see a background with this level of detail and lighting from ya.

And yeah... this is the 3rd large- armed/handed female we've seen on this forum. It's probably a faze you are going through from working on Myst 3; you know, big hands are probably symbolic of powerful craftmanship and long arms are the reach.

Wow, i like the way you did this, i think the lighting is fine, i can feel movement in the picture, especially from the guitarist chick. very nice

if you want it less cartoony maybe make the highlights less flat? more hmm gradient/airbrushy? just an idea, i wouldnt change it tho, this reflects your style

I understand bordom with a particular style but I really like what's happening here.

I love the chick with the guitar, the pose and everything.
It's a nice mix of styles, sort of anime in a way with the flat shading. It really has a mood. very stylish.

'sides you get a ton of extra points for the non generic subject matter.

I like this pic Francis. As far as your characters being too "cartoony" though.. well it seems to be your style. You have a tendency to exaggerate muscles and make them very round. Which in turn gives it a cartoony look. Plus you draw the heads wide and short which also looks a little toon-ish. I think the style looks great, but if you are going for realism those are some things you can look at. I was actually thinking of doing a pic like this, but from a stage perspective. Behind the singer and guitar players overlooking the crowd. I think stage lighting would look cool if pulled off right.
