Is there any interest in my writing up how this was done? I would do it for a 3dpalette column. Or is it obvious how it was done? Maybe it does not ring your bell? Help me out here...
The drawing was done in photoshop. I have been interested a long time in how to draw in a style that was easier to do digitally than the usual line drawing. This kind of strong shape nervous line seems to work best for me. I hate scanning a pencil, which I have not done for a long time now.
PS bought an Epson 1270 printer. VERY impressed. Thanks, Danny.

I think it could be intresting. Havent found any good way to do lines either so I still use the scanner sometimes. This subject definitly should be explored further.

Altough I like painter's inkpens(it's hard with them too) better than PS brushes I'd still be interested. |

The image seems a little obvious, but people are always asking how to do that kind of thing. I'm sure there will be nuggets of your personal philosophies throughout, so it's still good
Do you recommend the Epson over the current HP line? |

I'd be interested, but I'm also interested in why you prefer to draw directly in photoshop instead of scanning pencil work? Scanning is kind of a hassle, but don't you find the control of a pencil preferable to what you can draw in photoshop? For me at least, I can't get the same line quality or control that I can with pencil and paper.
Aside from that tho, I'm always interested in how you decide what level of detail to use, how to compose shapes, and how to determine lighting/values. Please share!

I don't have a scanner and I only do linework on the way to something else. (I actually quite like the photoshop pencil. possibly because I use it a lot and think the real thing is a tool of satan.)
If anyone asked you "How did you do that?" with regards to that picture I'd feel the need to say to them "Uh, didn't he just, like, get photoshop and, like, draw it like on paper but in, like, photoshop instead?"
If folks think its way way way more complicated than that (general arty skill notwithstanding) then maybe a tute would be a good idea |

I've tried and failed to get line to work properly on a computer. painter is a ton better than PS at it but still not good enough.
personaly I try to use traditional when ever I can, becase I hate staring at a screen all day. with that said I just spent about an hour and a half scanning sketches. have to get a better scanner.
but as I think you are saying the lines you're using are the sort of thing that is better done on a computer than with a pen.
I'd like to hear how you did it but it seems pretty self explanatory to me. there might be some little revelations tho
Alias-Can't speak for spooge but I'd recommend Epson over hp. |

I have a really hard time doing line drawings in PS... but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'm using a mouse. Not just any mouse but a RIGHT-handed mouse and I happen to be a LEFT-handed gal. Usually I do a very, very rough sketch, scan it in and trace out the major parts of my drawings with the polygonal lasso tool. Actually the P.L. tool is just about the only way I can draw in PS because of my right-handed mouse disability.
I would LOVE to hear how the drawing was done.
And where are some of the other PS painting tutorials on the board? Anybody have a URL for me? I'd appreciate it

Well, I personally have always liked sketching straight into PS now that I've gotten used to the tablet. I don't like to be very clean with my line, infact I've had other artists comment on the fact that they were dismayed to see the sketchyness of the original drawing get lost when I render it in PS. If I do draw it up on paper first I usually leave the sketch showing through the painted image because to me it just adds a little life and energy to the pic. I think it's also the reason why I like your stuff so much, spooge...your line gives each image life. To each his own I guess. Here's an example though:
The original sketch...
then the pic without the sketch showing through...
and then the final pic with the sketch...
...dunno if these illustrate my thoughts. They're just a close up of a portion of an image I did. Whether I sketch it in pencil or in photoshop I tend to leave the sketchy lines in is my point. Of course, there's something to be said for being able to have a clean line...I'm working on it =)

Flint.... hmm... I dunno if it's just me and maybe I'm overlooking something... but I don't really see a sketch showing through on that second image. It looks the same as the other version to me ^_^

you may want to try drawing blocks and sort of carving in them. It works MUCH better, at least here. You get the shape and basic color in one step that way. Drawing lines with digital tools is not the way to go i think. They just don't feel in anyway like pencil. |

This is a particular kind of drawing. A more precise drawing would be better on paper, I agree. But what I was trying to do was like tying one hand behind my back to draw in a different way. Ever try to draw with a stick dipped in ink on paper? How about not looking at your paper, only the subject? It gives some interesting distortions. So this was just an attempt to let a different technique influence the drawing.
Most of the work I do I use no line drawing at all, just areas of color and value and carve away. Just a different way of working.
Danny seems to be the man when it comes to printers. I know nothing! I am happy with the Epson. I never owned a printer before. I will use it to print out some digital paintings and paint them in oil.
Nori, there is a big difference in form and shape, and I see the two used interchangeably on the forum too much. Heres a weak explanation

I agree with the Epson - top-quality printer for the price. Once I got the color calibration fixed, my clients couldn't tell it from a photograph.
As always - I'd love to hear any advice or techniques you'd like to share. So many artists jealously guard their photoshop secrets. In particular though, I'd like to hear about how you pick your colors/schemes. More than any other artist I've encountered (contemporary), you seem to be able to instantly pick the right value for say, a yellow-white light filtered through green foliage reflecting off skin and casting a shadow.
That's the help I could really use these days - picking hues and values. Right now it's a crapshoot in my pictures, and a lot of trial and error.

I agree with plant. I have a heck of a time choosing colors that are the corect value for a given stroke.
What kind of color palette do you use? Or so you just use the picker?

^^A line drawing I did a little while ago with the tablet.
The thing I notice most about line drawing with the tablet is, I have to be a lot more thrifty with the lines, and the lines I do use are a bit shakier than they'd be on paper. But I kinda enjoy the twist my style takes in doing so. The only time I ever draw on paper anymore it seems is to just doodle.
As for the printer, I have an Epson Stylus 740. Works pretty nicely on glossy paper, but it's not portfolio quality.

Ah. I remember doing some exercises like that in one of the few good art classes I had in school. So this is about sort of mixing it up a little in terms of getting stuff from your brain to the "paper?" It would be interesting to read your analysis of how it works for you, or what you learned from it, or how it would change how you ordinarily work.

I don't have a clear idea of what you guys mean when you say "shapes"? Do you mean like you draw out basic shapes? like uhmm spheres, cones, etc.? Could you give me an example of what you mean? |

Hey Spooge... wow.. departure time from the standard..
About the Epson. Good choice! Probably the best quality you can get from a sub $500 colour printer at the moment. I'd be interested in hearing your personal findings on the box. Especially if you encounter the colour shifting problem I mentioned in your other thread.
