Well this is some..planes/lightstudy I guess, call it a portrait This is Risca, a fearsome cyber pirate. Err anyways,
I would like to get some help with the lighting etc.
There are two versions..the smaller one is his friendly brother Isaac. Hehe seriously though, its a earlier version and I want to know which one looks best. Also the tattoo on the pirate one, I'm not sure if it looks ok.. and last, any suggestions on what to add is welcome, I have no idea how his lower body should look like.
I tried adding some different colors to the skin, like red tones on the noses/cheeks/ears, but it didnt look any good :\

Wildkat: Yay, I kinda dig the top one too
Isric: Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
Haarg2: Oh yes, I added a few mutant spacemonkeys, but unfortunately they damaged the composition, so for now they are on a invincible layer.

Hey Binx!
Nice to see you still hard at work. =) I like the pirate's brother better fot the following reasons:
- There are less distractions. The skin
is rather low contrast/diffused, but
the tatoo and eye patch are either very
dark or too bright, which are too
distracting, taking away from the face's
form and readability.
- urm, I thought there were more points, never mind. =)
Otherwise, I think the nose is too flat/squareish and too bright, but I would maybe lighten a small bit his bottom lip. It seems you have a fairly good understanding of the forms and how light affects them, but perhaps you need a bit more work on understanding the smaller details, like the curvature on the lips, brow, forehead, cheeks, etc... but like I said, in general, it's looking good!
If you're into 3d modeling, you can perhaps (PERHAPS!) find a decent looking 3d head on the net where you can go in and see the face/vertex normals and see where the faces and geometry point, finding the perpendicular axis to these faces .. it makes for easier understanding of curvatures and such.
cheers,
frost. |

Looks good Binke. The nosewings(?) needs some work i think. The eyes/brows looks really good. the tatoo looks alittle like it is applied to a flat surface rather than a rounded head. use the lines in the tatoo to define the roundness of the skull. |

Looks great, i love the way the head emerges from total darkness.
only things i can suggest is try and add some highlights to the skin, and try working a bit more on the lower part of the nose. |

Hey Frostie!
Interesting point there. I'll look into it, and see if I should keep the eyepatch or not.
Oh yes the nose, agreed it looks a bit too squareish. What do you mean about understanding the smaller details?
Please show, paint damnit!
I'm not into 3D modelling, but ok hehe. Thanks for the comments.
Simon: Thanks and yepster, nosewings looks a bit squarish like the nose..ill fix that. Tattoo. *sigh* hehe, maybe ill go for his brother instead.
Bilbo: thank you! I'll see what my plastic surgeons can do with his nose.

I like the studies you did here. I spent about a half hour with this, so it is crude rude and poo poo. Sorry if I made bad with your pirate design. I liked the study myself, and wanted to do a similar pose, only I think he is a cynic, so I cocked his head to the right and gave him a piratey smirk. I have no idea if it helps, the thing I would say is ramp down your values as they dissipate from the light. THing with this guy is that he has the red cowel around his neck and that will give off some boounce lighting, reddish of course, back into his face.
Anyway, these are very strong studies. Good luck with your end results. And Post em for us to see

ARGH! Bastard! hehe, now you make me look all poo poo =)
That is solid.
Alright, ill sit down and study/compare that pic for a while. Interesting lighting. I never thought about the cowel bouncing back light on the face. And you succeeded in adding some red to the nose/cheeks..shazbot!
I'll post some updates. That is, if I'm not too lazy
thanks for your help

Time to bring this old thread back to life
I have updated the pic, looks a bit better me thinks. I dunno , what do you think? I changed the facial structure a bit, smoothened out nose, tried making the tattoo looking less "pasted on". I also added some reds to the nose & the ears. And as you see I'v started to rough out the body. Anyways..

Tjena Binke!
It is looking good. About the tattoo. I noticed that you made it brighter, I belive for an attempt to have it blend more seamlessly onto his head, no?
The main direction of the main light is vertical, up to down. The tatto lies on his head, follow its form. I think that it would look even better if you made the perpendicular to the light, part of the tattoo brighter than the part that is not perpendicular to the light.
The eyeglass. It would take a more "glossy" look if your specular aspect were more defined in relation to its surrondings. Maybe giving the glass a less white reflective area?, so that the specular could stand out more?
Bra jobbat Binke!
Pierre
