i have this problem where i let myself become intimidated by having to make art. i'm doing terrible in my art classes, so i have to wonder, maybe i shouldn't even bother and save myself thousands of bucks in tuition

i think, maybe i should just join the working class and hope these neurotic tendencies of mine will go away.

but then i think, well, what good is avoiding the situation? i should dive headfirst in the schoolwork or die trying! but i've been so unsuccessful so far. so it seems like either fail and lose lots of money or fail and save lots of money.

what i think i'd like to do is maybe get another part time job and partake in some local community college courses (very cheap) instead and take it slow and easy or something. but it seems like the easy way out.

what to do, what to do.

what should i do? you think?

Well, how old are you? I think you should be able to tell if creating art is what you want to do for the rest of your life.. if your not sure.. well i guess taking it easy couldnt hurt. Im in my final year of my JC and will most likely go to an art collge next year.. hopefully

I hear ya. I had the exact same problem and in some classes I still do. I have a design class in which I have to create these crazy sculptures, mind you I've never sculpted before, so when I get to class I find I'm not able to work on anything. Yet in my drawing class I draw with ease. Drawing is my strong point so I don't feel intimidated when people watch me do it.

I only got this way because I started taking lots of art courses. I forced myself to draw in front of people. I even recently took on a volunteer job where I drew portraits of students and teachers to raise money for the art department. Now THAT made me nervous My portraits looked awful! But it was the experience of doing it that really made the difference.

I think you should go for it. If it's something you love then don't deny yourself the pleasure. If people gawk over your shoulder while you sketch just chuckle and say, "It's weird having you watch me draw like that." They always understand. And not only that, but after a while you find that you're not telling them to leave anymore

Do what you feel is right for yourself. Who cares if you flop the first semester or two of art? You'll get past it.

If it is something that you love doing, you should keep out it. Somethings don't come easy. If you can afford to (time wise, financially etc), maybe take a year off to 'discover' yourself and figure out what you want to do. I've never taken an art course in my life so it is difficult to suggest things. It does seem though a real difference can be the teacher. Do you have a good one that 'inspires' or someone who is collecting their pay packet, growing old while slowly dying?

Whatever you decide, remember that you are going to be doing it for a while, or not. You can always change your mind later on.

if the community college has a great teacher...one with decent work and good communication skills...then go there...it really doesnt matter where you make art ..as long as you have a few good people around you who can lead you down the right path.


save the cash til a school will pay you to go there. I spent 3 and a half years learning under a painter at a community college. his art program and lesson plan would have taken 5 years to complete so I had plenty to learn. I got more from him than my expensive education at Ringling School of Art.

just keep drawing...do whatever you have to do to follow your dreams and your goals.
