I'm just about done with high school and I'm not sure what I'll do. I'm asking you the same as Tinusch : Am I good enough ? Should I do this ? Can I get good enough ?
Could the lot of you that has already gone through art school please tell me their honest opinions ? Should I go to an art school ?
I've thrown my stuff in http://www.saunalahti.fi/~late82/tmp
and I have a net page up at http://www.saunalahti.fi/~late82

The whole point of studying is to better yourself. Don't rely too heavily on the opinions of others.
It's impossible for someone to assess your potential from these forums and your pictures alone.
I think that your work is good. I personally don't think that it's a case of whether you are good enough or not . . . so forget about that issue. It's whether you want to study art or not.
Working fulltime at McDonalds would really suck.

If you don't go to art school you will regret it in the future. There is no question your work is cool and it seems like you are motivated to create. On the other hand you will be missing out on the free McDonalds lunches.

hi klaviu. I like your homepage and the pics.
I just wanted to remind you that there are jobs dealing with creativity witch don't demand of you to paint all the time. I'm working in an advertising Agency and most of the "art" people don't know how to hold a pencil. After the art school there were several ways to go (web-design, package-design,... and illustration) if you are good enough you can change the way afterwards if you don't like the job.
(sorry for the bad Englisch).

I tried writing a big long reply but came to the conclusion that whatever I say is not going to really help it's just subjective dribble.
I think you have some good work there. if you're just out of HS then it is even better. it is about what you want to do not if you can do it. Personaly I "couldn't" work at macdonalds. I simply could not do it. I knew at some level that if I got into some course that wasn't art based then I would go insane from all the stuff bouncing around in my head.
I would suggest that you make a good choice in your "Art" school if you decide to go down that path. In my experiance a bad school, (or what is probably one that doesn't teach what you want to learn) can do more harm than good.
Often "fine art" courses are more about writing essays about why you just did a drawing than actuialy drawing anything.
Try as best you can to figure out what you eventialy want to do with yout skills and then make a choice around that. even if you change your mind it is better than to just say that you want to get "better" and take the first course that looks good. A year and a bit ago I was in the same position as you. I waited until the last minute, made a snap decision and got screwed by my own stupidity. I had no doubt that I wanted to do "art" but I didn't really know what that was. my version of Illustration, my version of "art", "design" etc' I had a differnt idea about what everything was all about. I had a vuage but vivid idea of what I wanted to do and really didn't think about it properly.
Not saying that you are the same or anything, just exchanging experiances. If maybe it's not something you've thought about.
Idunno there is no point in asking other people. I mean what are artists going to say. "of course do art". "it's so much fun". everyone else is just insane doing "other" things.
try going without drawing or anything simmilar for a while and see how long it takes you to get withdrawl symptoms
Hey I just wrote a big long reply with a ton of subjective dribble. *sigh* I'll press the submit button anyway. hope you can get some sense out of my ranting. The best anyone can really do is "if I were you I'd...) which is a wast of time anyway.

okay, well, Rinaldo, the idea of not drawing for an indefinite period of time already gets me shivers ...
It would take only one " youre no good " - comment to get me to lose all faith in myself - the reason I'm asking this is that I'm sort of checking that i really could do this. For some reason I'm always asking other people for their opinions instead of making a decision myself - guess im just a weak person. I enjoy drawing, and It'd be a "dream come true" to get paid for it. But it just seems a weird and perverted thought that everything is going to work out and that I get to do what I want with my life..
sort of a case of " what can go wrong, goes wrong ". ( I hope that any of this makes sense .. )
about that mcdonalds thing .. it really was a kind of a personal joke - any other real option besides art for me would be medical school.
( But - an another question :
I'd be interested in the chance of studying abroad, preferably in the UK. Know of any good fine arts schools ? )
edit : idiotic grammar ..

I think you know that nobody here would say 'you suck, off to bugerville with you...'
Your work has some promise, and like everyone else in the world, you could benefit from more training and education.
However, I must say I liked working at Hardees for a summer. Free food, nifty blue hat, I got to screw with drive-through soccer moms, and work with my best friends.
Everyone should work fast food to get some perspective on their job and life methinks.

You definitely have the ability; I wish I were where you are at your age. You should do it.
I would love to have been a doctor. My brother is an ER dude. If medicine fascinates you, dont count it out too quickly. But if its those guys make a lot of money and mum and pup would be so proud motivation, dont do it.
But like I said to Tinusch, dont get art goggles and neglect an education. That you would regret.

spooge : heh, doctors and nurses in Finland don't get paid too well - the trend here is that people want to either go abroad to work or start up private clinics instead of working in the public health service because of the low pay. theres also the fun of overlong hours because of budget cuts and savings.. so you have to have some interest in medicine to choose to have it as a profession .. |

McDonalds all they way!!!!! :P
Seriously you should persue what you truly love and if it's art then you should go for it. In the future you'll be glad you did.
Good luck!

Where theres a will theres a way. Thats how the old saying is. Hmm I think McDonald's only pays like 4.66 an hour or whatever the minimum wage is?. Hmm hold on, let ask my parents... they'd know!

Tough question, but really it's a simple one for you, with a bit of thinking and reflection I guess.
I'm in the same boat, or was about last year when I had to start thinking about colleges. I'm a senior myself, and I'm planning full-heartedly to go to an art school. I could probably call myself lucky, to have an older brother who's in college right now. He's at Princeton, one of the top Ivy-league schools...and here I am wanting to go to an art school. He like sports, I liked art, and so it came to be.
Just visiting Princeton, staying there and going to his classes gave me a cramped feeling. Feelings of boredom sure, but plenty of understanding for what my brother was shooting for. He might want to become an actor, or a business man...so he became a philosophy major because he likes poetry, wisdom, and well, philosophy.
If I even thought of going to Princeton, or working in McDonald's, I just wouldn't be happy, cause I wouldn't be challenged, I wouldn't be learning to improve my art and share with others, and I wouldn't be fighting for what I want to do when I get out of college, which is work for a place like PIXAR, or ILM, or Disney cause I've always been in awe at the movies that come from those places.
But that's just me. Basically, find what YOU want to do, try it out, see how you like it....visit some art schools. That totally got me excited about an Art school versus a university life in an instant by going there. And maybe you'll find that a different atmosphere better suits you...just find what you're happy doing, and can see yourself striving in the future in.
- Sorry I wrote so much... It's an important question and if you got anything from what I or others have said, then well, hopefully things will be clearer for you,
Good luck
