While I am waiting for one of the guys here to model this thing, here are the images for you guys to model one too, or to use to understand the planes of the head.

I am finishing up the complete head tutorial, rewritten, and reimaged, from start to finish. I am including line art,for the traditional artists, and tone painting for the digital artists.I am going to pass it on to Immi first, and see what he wants to do with it. Then, if I can, I will post it here, hopefully with a zipped version also. I still have the last part to write, and some images to put together, but it is more than 80% complete.

I explain this head in the tutorial, so maybe I will just post that particular part with these again before long, but for the most part, this is the head construction of all heads, given this is a caucasion type this was modelled from. The left half of the model is the male side, more defined, more chiselled, the right half is the ideal female face, less planes, rounder surfaces...

Hope to see this thing posted as a 3d model by someone soon...sorry for your time spent, now resume your day/night...

Sounds great, Fred. As you know I've been beating my head against the wall trying to learn to paint these.

I can see allot just looking at these photos; it really helps fill in the missing pieces. Thanks a million.

To anyone out there, I am looking for one of these Asaro heads. If you know where I can find one, or if you are interested in selling yours, please let me know. I am definitely in the market and willing to pay. Thanks.

They do not make this anymore. Hasn't been made in about 6 years. THese photos are all you guys might get for a while, unless John Asaro wants to make more of these.

Any way you could get me images of the front and both sides without the dramatic lighting? Get me those, and in higher res and I can whip out a replica for you in no time.

Don't know if this is the place for it, but I wanted to try a sort of value study exercise using this as a starting point. I think I got it kinda dark at the bottom of the cheek.

Anthony, are you talking about 3D or real?

I may try just making one out of Sculpey.

It'd be 3d, but you'd never kow it. I don't have the time to sculpt one-in Lightwave I can model it in no time, but i need better reference on the front left side.

One thing to be careful of is the sharp definition of the planes. In one sense this is good, it teaches you to keep your values and shapes organized, and makes them mean something very specific in terms of form.

On the bad side of things, if you look at the nose and cheek and brow, you see the hard edges? Look at the cast shadows from these forms. Nice and soft. Hmmmm..

It should be the exact opposite. The nice soft turn of the brow with the sharp cast shadow on the cheek is an important thing to get used to.

Well, just keep it in mind.

Hi there.

I'm not really familiar with John Asaro. Could someone tell me a bit about him? Is the head useful as a guide (from what I can see it sets out the areas into identifiable shapes really nicely!) or is it just the Asaro's style? Perhaps someone can provide a URL?

BTW - on a lighter note, it's Kryton from Red Dwarf!

Ceenda, John Asaro is a fine artist one of the finest damn colorists ever to walk the face of the Earth(somewhat like Sorolla). He is now a painter, but learned sculpture as a youth and applied the knowledge he gained to his painting later on. He was A student of Frank Riley at the art students league and did this head sculpture\drawing aid some years ago.

hi. What happended to this tutorial? Did it fall down the cracks and get lost into the void of spam pop-up windows from which there's no return? How come you have to give it to immi first? and why aren't you aloud to just post it here whenever you want? Just wonderin'. Would be very helpful for me.

You know what would be reeeeeely good....to make it in 3d then convert it to flash...ive seen sum proggy that can take the 3d models and convert them to vector grafix in flash or sumthin...and at the same time making it interactive in the 3d sense...dunno how they do it...but they do...then we can have an interactive 3d head =)

Somebody should take a new cast from that one and start selling them. I have a cast of my entire head(and shoulders) at home. I use it sometimes, but it starts falling apart,
so i have to fix that.

Damn i want that one!!!

Hey Fred, here's a model I did of a charecter drawn by Hurricane

I think this model could easily be converted to fit the planes (It'd use individual polygons to show the planes, but hey they are planes after all)
what do you think? (btw the model on the right side, is a color smoothed version of the one on the left

Why are the two sides modelled with different detail?

FRED -

Some of these planes on the head seem rather confusing to me. I'm sure its because of my rather lacking knowledge. Maybe you could help me out.

No.1 I usually don't think of a plane here.

No.2 This one just rubs me wrong. I don't know why.

No.3 I would have made this straight.

Help.

That was just a test. Sorry. I got love bugged and lost all my html's. 4000 + bookmarks wiped out with a blink of an eye. Not to mention 2800 jpegs. Gotta love that shit.

I can't believe this came creeping back up through the pipe.

I have a friend at work NateC from the forum working up a 3D model from the original cast. IT is close to finished. When completed I want to animate it so it can be spun around in any direction. I would also like to have a script written so we could have a floating light in the picture plane so it too could be repositioned, and add other lights etc. Big wish list, but I know it can be done.

Anyway, amnesia, pretty nice attempt, but it definitely needs some refining in terms of the overall mass. Those pictures are a bit tricky to look at since the lighting is a bit poor.

Liquid-I hope I can answer these questions correctly, here goes...
THe model was done in two different plane schematics to show a few things. First, the differences in a male and female head in regards to the way the planes are seen, the softness of a female vs. the rigidity of the male form. It also shows the difference in a young head vs. and old head. It is also just two different ways of seeing form. Some people are more developed than others, thus the lack of fine tuned details on one side vs. the other.

Plane 1 is the globella of the head combined with the superciliary crest or brow ridge. In comic books Jim Lee always accented this area with frown lines, and some zig zag pattern cutting horizontally between the eyes. This area separates the brow from the eye sockets and bridge of the nose.

Plane 2 is the top plane of the zygomatic arch, or zygomatic bone. This bone defines the cheeks. It exists as a hollow area of the skull that acts as a sheath for the jaw muscles that connect up on the side of the skull known as the temporals...

Plane three is caused by the Procerus musce wrinkling, and this is the location where cartilage and bone meet in the nose. This is a very advanced model, much anatomy is needed to understand it completely.

It is also a bit deceiving in its lit nature. For example, looking at this, the eye facing us is too sharp on the top ridge of the socket, and its cast shadow is too soft. It would actually be the other way around. And the edge of light and dark on the nose is too sharp. But again, this is a model of the head, it is showing the deliberate breaks in the planes of the face vs. it being specific to any type, and softness of plane divisions. It is a tool, not an end to itself.

hands hurt ...
