Finally I found some time to try to paint something with my new wacom. I was dabbling now for about 2 hours on this one. Maybe it's a little naive in style, but this is the very first drawing I did using no lineart at all. I never before painted with color on canvas, but spooge, fred, vebjorn and some others impressed me so much I had to try. Tell me what you think about this first time effort and what I could do to improve on this technique...

Hi, Jaymo!

Feeling is nice on it. I think that this is quite good one but it's a bit blurry and smudgy somewhere. My tip is: try to give it more sharpen forms and things. The gems are much more shiny and reflective, fire could get some more shades and veriations of colours and stuff like that. This looks a bit like it wasn't finished yet. You have given good athmosphere though. It has a good idea. Go on with this!

Jaymo: I like it (although it need MUCH definition since it's so very blurry). I think it would be very cool to have a dead halfling (skeleton) where the guy with the torch is looking... as though the gem his companion is reaching for will kill him and he's just at the moment of realising it... anyway.
nice!

I really like this one!

I think the only thing it needs is a bit more rough edges in the rocks on the cave walls and on the rockpile. It should be a bit more craggy but otherwise I love it. Good work!

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

YourMum: You're right, this one ain't finished yet, but I was asking myself if I should define it any further. But since you all liked it I'm gonna put some more work into it. Agree with your suggestions, still I don't think the gem will be too reflective, since it's self-illuminated and not the regular gem-look. Still some reflections might help, though it's hard to do, cause there's very little light in that cave...

Frost: Yeah, you motivated me enough to go in for the detailing... Nice idea with that skeleton, I'll consider it.

Flexible Elf: Thanks a lot, jaggy rocks on the way...

Jaymo, I'm sorry because of my recent words because I meant that self-illumianted thing. That's it. Btw, keep working man!

Oh heck, I'm such a f*cking moron!! Didn't realize I was saving the pic as jpeg and not PSD two times after making lots of changes to it, ARGH! But well, it was for exercise. And it's still good enough quality for web. Hope you like it, this is as far as detail goes, gotta do something new.
Please tell me what you think about the changes made.

OK, I did some more changes to the second version, mainly to justify a reboost of the thread, I'm about to drop off the page. Man, it's hard to get some replies here with everything being so fast paced.
Please tell me what you think of it now. Don't make me beg...or surprise you with the same pic in a new thread! Ha! Nope, I won't.

Jaymo: Looks nice, crisper, and better. Here are a few ideas, feel free to discard and take in what you like.

I would personally try to increase the contrast and drop some of the midtones out, making a sharper cut from light to dark, making a sharper "core shadow"(?), but I guess you could end up reading the image less if you took them all out. Since the only two light sources in the scene are the torch and the gem(s), I would not hesitate to drop out the grey colors found in the rock and environment. Overall, there seems to be another light/ambiant laying around but we can't really see it, perhaps having light seeping though a crack in the ceiling and such would explain it... but that's a little vague... anyway. Maybe just overlaying some violet and yellow over the grey would generally help, give it a quick try out and see what it gives.

Perhaps making the hand reaching for the crystal nearly as bright as the crystal itself with a very sharp cut to shadow to give it form would indicate the glow and closeness of the hand better.

Anyway, no one generally cares what I have to say, so, I'll go back too depressing. cya.

Eh? What's too depressing? As for what you have to say, I do care. And I have proof, see:

Thanks for your feedback, it helped. I hope I didn't overtweak (is that a word?) it now...consider this one finished. File closed.
If anybody steps in here, please feel free to comment, I like to hear it, even if you don't like it.

Hey Jaymo! Yep! This is something I supposed to see in my mind when I wrote my first comment about your picture! The last one is really nice. There are sharp forms and it looks really fine!

Hey Jaymo,

I think it looks very nice, but then again, I'm no master. =) It looks much clearer and defined. Cool image, will be looking forward to your next images!
