I've been looking at a lot of incredible art work here and I was thinking it would be a shame if a particular artist didn't get proper credit for their work.
I'm kind of new to posting work on the internet and I was curious if there was any rule of thumb dealing with copyright issues for not only my own work but in refering to others work?
Or is it best judgement and trust in humanity?
Ha ha,
Any clarification on the subject would be much appreciated even if it's
"What you don't trust us?"
No need to dive into a sticky situation, just wondering. |

Capiche.
But, he he
I'm building a website and I wanted to know if there was something I had to do to my pictures besides putting my name on it to ensure copyright.
If this subject is too grey, I'll just shut-up and drop it.

Keep your .psd files! That is PROOF that you made such and such piece if it is ever questioned in a court of law. Also, Photoshop offers two ways to imprint your name, and other relevant information into the photo. One of these is Digimarc, very expensive, as in not worth the price unless you are a professional. The other (cheaper) way is to go to "File", then to "File Info". Complete the information that you want then save. After doing that, when ever that picture is brought up in photoshop, you can view it. You can also change it but since the percentage of people using photoshop compared to people on the net is so small, it's just one more little thing that can provide proof. *Edit* Blitz, just FYI, any image is copyrighted as soon as it is released publicly.

I just had a thought (just one)
I know that screenwriters mail a sealed copy of their scripts to themselves. Postmarks are recognized by the courts. You have proof of authorship and a date, if it comes to that.
So mail yourself a zip or two and seal it with the family crest in wax

Mailing a copy of work to yourself will not stand up in a court of law! It's very esy for someone to mail an unsealed envelope to themselves to get a postmark. Copyright law is very complex. If you have any question about protecting your work I suggest you see a copyright lawyer. I don't claim to be a lawyer or even look like one but as a rule of thumb, an image or piece of work becomes copyrighted when it is published or publicly displayed for the first time. However, this does not mean your copyright is affored the full protection of the law. For full copyright protection in the US you must submit a copy of the work in question with a small fee to be the US gov't (see lawyer rant above). If you do not submit a formal copyright your work may or may not be protected under law.

Some guy named Craig Mullins keeps stealing all my pics and posting them on his site, claiming that he did them. |

One way is to hide your name or initials in the actual painting. Almost like an Easter Egg type of thing.
