this is my first serious try... took me about 4 hours.

no references... using photoshop and a wacom tablet.

Here is some advice:
USE A REFERENCE
More contrast
Add color
Work on the female anatomy below the face.

yggdrasil, i would suggest you finish the rest(neck and shoulders) without it it will look incredible unfinished, just a floating head.it looks quite nice as it is, the only thing i can see, is that it is shaded too soft. The eyes lips and nose need to be sharper defined. The head looks too wide.
besides from that it looks quite nice.

I did a quick paintover to show how you can
shape the face and not make it too soft.
Make up a lightsource and let the shadows and highlights shape the head. use few values as a skeleton to begin with and move in as you go along. i use big brushes to begin with and smaller as i detail. I also cropped the picture because it had too much unnecessary space. Hope this example can help you some.

It hit me that it would serve as a good skin for a face model in "three-dee". Or am I wrong?

thanx guys... i really appreciate the advice!

i definitely agree with the face being too wide and undefined/flat. i didn't feel that way when i was drawing it, but after having stepped away from it for a while it is glaringly obvious.

i think part of it is also that i overworked the picture... i remember it being a lot less soft when i started it.

lemme see if i can redo it a bit.

ps - i tried to colorize it, but it turned out looking like some sort of a manaquin. not sure if it's because due to the coloring or the fact that the original drawing was very plasticy...

oh and yes, spike, i think the face does look sort of 3d modelish... a la Quake, perhaps?

reminds me of a mannequin for some reason... her hair is a little tall, but thats personal preference. the shoulders don't seem shoulder-like, it seems like her head and neck are sitting on the top of a smooth hill...
shading is VERY nice, as is the hair! good job!

I like how you've cropped the picture and adjusted the width. A few suggestions... take the darkest shadow (in this case, under the roots of her hair) and apply that value to the other places on her face where there is an equal absence of light, i.e. under the nose and chin, the bottom of her hair. Also, you can use dark lines around or under the eyes and lips to make the shapes stand out better, as in Micke's drawing. Contrast helps clarify, your gradations are so soft that it's hard to tell where, say, the eyes end and the skin begins. Hope that's not too wordy. And I hope I don't sound too critical, I really like this!

the more critique the better!

i definitely agree that she still looks like a mannequin... but hopefully less so that the original pic. what i can't seem to figure out is how to get the shadows to stand out more without making the face harsh/gaunt. perhaps use smaller brushes to apply the shadows, and use less smoothing? i think maybe that will get the effect you're looking for sacrelicious...

i was using micke's sketch as a reference for my second pic, but for some reason his looks 3d and mine looks 2.5d

heh, the shoulders are there just so that her head isn't floating in the middle of a void... not even close to being finished.
