My feeble attempt to create my own sci-fi character. I know, its got problems... but at least its a start. Hopefully someday I'll get a drawing tablet or something and be able to do this better. But for now...

that is nifty darynz! The colors don't look like they match or something...like more aqua-ish in the bkg and white-ish on the figure...are they lighted from the same light source?....hmm...maybe that works...
the hair looks good too |

The program I used was photoshop. I'm still having a hard time with a lot of things with it, but I guess I'll get the hang of it eventually.
Yeah I know, the colors were a problem when I made this, because I finished the character before I even started to design the backdrop, and I guess thats generally a bad idea, although I havn't learned how to do otherwise yet. |

The colours and the style look brilliant and i really like it. The aspect that really lets the image down is the structure of the character. Next time when you are first starting an image, spend more time on the anatomy of the character. If you nail this, your images will look fantastic.

Hmm, thats kind of disappointing to know, since the one thing I was actually proud of in this picture was that for once I felt that the anatomy was right on target. It took a whole ton of sketches before i reached that... so I was really hoping it would pay off. Guess not. Oh well, live and learn. Maybe I'll just stick to doing creatures. |

I like it, so don't be discouraged. The right forearm/hand is really nice. The colors aren't important really, since it's not looking for absolute realism-it's looking for an alien, outer space feel. There are certainly things to work on, like defining materials better(metal that looks like metal, etc), but in general I like it.

Yeah I had to do it all with a mouse, which is not fun, let me assure you. And no, the background was not done in 3d, i did that in photoshop too. |

The character is based on a 3d character, right?
I've done that a couple of times myself. It's
difficult. Could you show us the original
pose with the model?

Micke seems right. It seems to me that your chara has a very 3Dish-finish-looking, too.
And the whole figure ("HER" right arm in special) has a very plastic-"Poser"-style looking.
I really like "HER" head !!!
See ya.
[EDIT.]
I got the point... edited "his" x "her"
You shouldnt be soooo upset , you should understand that you arent talking with an english-native, youre talking with a lazy english student who loves this stuff...
And dont be soooo upset pal, I keep on thinking that HER arm seems be cutted from a Metacreations Poser model. And thats not that bad...
If you dont know it "Metacreations Poser" (now allows to other company) is a proogram which include a lot of "PRE-modeled" objects (persons, skeletons, dogs) that you can move and play with. Some artist use them as a reference to start with a rare pose or perspective as any of us could use the beloved pieced wooden model.
As you can see none of us wanted to say your pic sucks, in fact I like it a lot (is very "UNREALISH"), but only that, as you can check it has a hard 3D look.
You should be really happy, most of people need use soft as "Z-brush" to make her 2D paintings 3D looking... and you, pal, have reach it without spend a lot of bills...
[See ya.]
[Ah!, And let me know if you find other ortographic or gramatical mistake... I will very pleased to correct them]

I thought the same thing as micke first time I saw it. just has that "look" to it. Could be wrong but anyway, it looks cool however you did it
You might want to read the stuff that has been writen in the past concerning painting cubes. your background could do with some cube technology. also some of your edges are very hard, while this is probably better then being all fuzzy and undefined, it does make your character look like she's a paper cut out.
Good stuff, keep it up.

Yeah, her right hand looks rendered (very little doubt about it). But it looks nice overall. |

Whoa where did all this come from? Heh, first of all, its a she not a he Sempere. D'oh. And its not 3D at all. The only thing i used any 3d for was rendering the gun which I later painted digitally with photoshop. The rest is based on a sketch I did (as scanned and posted below), and digital photos of my own arms/hands in my computer lamp. The face is loosely based on the lighting on some model's photo I found. Whats funny is that I actually have attempted to base images on 3d lighting since then (this was actually finished in July) and those always came out horribly wrong in the end. I dont even know *how* to do 3D images like this. If I did, I probably wouldn't even bother to do 2D pics.
My problem is that I never took any sort of class on drawing figures, so unfortunatly, as you can see, certain things (like how her gun arm stretches out that way, and how her legs are a bit too big) dont look right at all. But i think I'm getting better... like i said this is a fairly old pic now and I've done things since that I'm more proud of, but still.

And yeah, I am aware of the fact that she looks kinda like a cardboard cut out. But when I did another version where the background was blurred, I felt it still didn't look right, and then I had wasted a decent background I had worked hard on anyway, so in the end I stuck with this.
Hmm... now I'm thinking maybe someone should check out the art on my website and let me know what they think, because if this pic is any indication of the problems I also have on my other art, I guess I really gotta start from scratch on how I do this kinda thing.

Man you must be the brains behind 3D Studio because that awsome pic definately looks rendered. Don't take it as an insult but more of a compliment. I couldnt help but stared at her right hand.. Btw did you save the steps? I'd love to see them. |

I agree about the skintones, however, I did originally try to have them be more realistic, but in the end I felt that somehow making an image look more like an actual real-life photograph takes away from its artistic style. Not to say that I have any artistic style, but I'm kind of aiming for having one some day. Its hard to explain. All i can say is that to me, it looked worse with normal skin. OH well. |

This is some good stuff. You say you did this in photoshop with a mouse? I hear ya man. I use a mouse also and it can get a bit tedious. Someone posted something very useful on this forum for us mouse users. I think it's called PS2Rate or something but I downloaded it and my mouse is so easy to contral now. It's as smooth as can be. I don not have the url but a search on the net may pull it up.
Keep up the great work!
