Hi all, take a good look and tell me what you're thinking.



This's my second attempt at a different way of painting for me based on what I've been studying on these boards from guys like spooge and other notables. I'm looking for comments on stuff like proportions, painting style, lighting...well, pretty much anything you see wrong with the pic so far. I still have to add the foreground elements that will frame the image from the right side and the bottom left corner...mostly vegetation. There're also some details like his belt and such that need to be put in and I'm still thinking about making that olive colored mantle of his a studded leather instead. I think this's the farthest I've ever gotten without using Dodge, Burn or Smudge =)

So if anybody has any comments that could help I'd appreciate it. Anyway, back to work...

must...resist..urge...to BURN (and dodge). =)

Dodge burn and smudge are evil.

Keep workingon it, looks awesome so far.

Your new picture is really interesting, and I hope you keep on working hard on it... It has a real potential... Keep on adding detail...

About the Burn and dodge question...

I would never use these tools on a picture like yours. You should be concerned that its nature is a traditional media emulation-one, you never should try those tools there!!!

I think that it�s like an "anachronism", two things that aren�t compatible, and when you look at them you see that something is wrong, weird.

Smudge, Dodge/Burn bashing is very common. People say it makes the paintings look too cg'ish.
Dodge/Burn that is.
I think that if you are going for a painted effect, then it is the last step (aka glazing from real oils) and it should be done very little.

If you are going for the painted look, then you should probably avoid too much smudging, but I use it despite what other people say.

I'm glad to hear that I'm on the right track. Like I said, this's the first time I've taken a "painter's" approach to doing an image. So far I've used nothing but the Paintbrush in Photoshop with hard edged brushes and the occasional eraser.

As far as Dodge/Burn/Smudge are concerned I used to use them all the time but I find myself slowly getting away from them. I work for a game company so I have to spit out textures for environments like it's my job or something...uhh, well I guess it is my job, heh. Smudge I rarely use and the Dodge and Burn I now do with the Airbrush on separate Dodge/Burn layers and that's only to add highlights and shadows. The only time I actually use the tool itself is after the texture is flattened and I need to add a couple more shadows or highlights before I add it to my model. How do some of you other artists work when it comes to production on games? I'm actually interested in seeing how someone like Shane Caudle works on his textures...does he go the "painterly" approach or is he taking a lot of Photoshop shortcuts to get the job done? I loved his Unreal work, much better than the typically earthy Quake style...it's a matter of personal taste I guess.

Anyway, I like the way I started this painting by blocking in shapes, no sketching, no lines like I usually work with. Hopefully I'll have an update on this image when I get around 80% to see what people think. I appreciate the encouragement here, again, thanks for the comments.
Anywho, back to work.

Really nice pic! The only I would say is that the edges of the light streaming down should be a lot softer. This would do two things, first it would make is look more natural, and also it would make the figure in the foreground pop out more. Right now the hard edges of the light are taking too much attention away from the figure.

Can't wait to see the finished version.
