Hello.. haven't really posted before. But here's a new picture I've been working on. It was hard for me because i tried staying away from those tools everyone says are bad... smudge/dodge/burn..

I used Paint shop pro 5 and worked on it for about 4 hours i guess?

It somewhat resembles Charlize Theron (major babe) but somethings lacking , heh..

Here's a sized down picture of it.

and here's a link to the original size, (300kb)
original size

and then here's a link to the reference...
picture reference

comments and critiques please, thank you...

Yeah it really has more to do with the user than the tool itself. for B+W Dodge and burn makes perfect sense. But using it as a crutch for getting colours and values is (while totaly up to whomever is drawing the pic) a bad way to learn.

nice pic btw deranged

burn/dodge fun. what seems like filtered/mechanically created may not be as it seems. have a go and try to spot it all.

this is old-ish. just a quick fuckaround in photoshop, raped out of the wallpaper, the vp's and perspective are bound to be fucked beyond all belief.

Good work Deranged. Keep workin on it. You have the basic structure of the face down, but it's the very subtle features of the face you dont notice right away that make or break an instant connection to whom it is that your portraying. Pretty difficult to do, but thats where practice comes in. Still, excelent work. Me thinks more people on this forum should pay attention to stuff like this..

I think youre totally right, you cant just say therese "bad tools".

i dont think thats it bad because people dont know how to use it, i think its because its used a shortcut to create values, instead of trying to build them up with layers of color..

that'd mean making examples = alot of effort.

i don't have time, and on the rare occassions i do have time, it's propably after 3 weeks of 16 hours per day graphics work and i do not want to even see a computer ever again........

Dodge/Burn are great, for dodging and burning... not painting. Almost any tool can be overused...

Some people bash smudge as well... it's not a bad tool.

Now when you are going for an oils effect, that's different.

thats my point exactly
i was going for a realistic painterly look.

not somethin that seemed entirely digitally created..

i myself am not saying these tools are bad, i like em alot.. i only said "bad tools" from the previous posts ive seen people mention about them.

besides, the way i draw stuff, i do things in black&white and color afterwards, i don't think anyone in his or her or it's sane and sound mind would want to do things in that way, it's just is not a good thing. mkay?

If your going for a more painterly look, which I believe Deranged was trying to do, I'd stay away from dodge and burn. They over do the values, or sometimes, just plain out get them incorrect. I think it's good to have a better understanding of values, before you make shortcuts.

Btw, I think the ear needs a bit of touching up. It's pretty loosly defined.
