It depends what you're doing. If you are doing webdesign: Photoshop 5.5 or 6.
If you are doing painting, well 4.0 hands down. Dhabi uses PS3.0. You don't want all the little menus getting in your way when you're just trying to paint.

6.0 seems about the same as 5.0 and 5.5 but with a few more features. It's not worse in my opinion. I've never used 4 so I can't compare it to that. All in all, 6 is good but I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade from 5.
I thought Dhab said he upgraded to 5.5 or something... yeah?

6 bothers me a lot. There are a few little new features I'll never use, and a few old features I used a lot that they made worse (like the brush menu.) I had almost convinced myself to change over, but they also changed the way some of the layer blending modes work... so many of my old texture maps from 5.5 look very, very wrong when loaded in 6.0.
It's better for web stuff, I guess. They've put a lot of work into filters and layer effects (bevel/emboss, etc.) But that's just not what most people here do. |

6.0 is much much faster for painting than any previous version. I remember using larger brushes and having huge chunk pauses in between the strokes in 4 and 5.
Brushes have somewhat stupid layout, and fonts are really uncomfortable to use, i liked older system better.
But oh well. I am sure if enough real pros complain to adobe it will get changed or will have an option to be changed back to the old style. |

I myself like very much what the version 2.5.1 has to offer.

3.0.5Universal was my favorite right up until 5.5. 5.5 is heaven for web stuff. I'm sure six is similar.
Can anyone tell me if the Pen Tool works like the illustrator Pen tool? like, how does it handle corners now?

Please tell me that they haven't changed the keyboard shortcuts again! Thats all I ask.
What was wrong with "a" for airbrush, why did they switch to "j"....?

6.0 is by far the best photoshop version ever, my experience goes back to using 2.0 and from a web design stand point, those grouping layers are a life saver. |

P6.0 as many have mentioned, is really good for web stuff and personally I like it. However they REALLY screwed up the brushes and the fonts. Arrghh ...

Maybe that is a request for ADOBE....instead of having one product suite all, maybe its time Adobe see the need for two products. One for web designers, and one for more tradional, and game designers. As they use the product radicaly difrently. But then again...when one has the one, one might want the other..so your back at square one..oh well.

the trick is that <5.5 and 6.0 are very different products, depending on what you need.. web design/design or painting
it will take some time to get use to the 6 to some people however, and people like me both painting and making design will be in trouble for some times... |

I have only used the beta version of 6.0 but my impression is that it's MUCH easier with the brushes, "WHAT?!?" I hear you scream. I just have this to say; shift + rightclick (gives you the brushes menu as a popup). This combined with holding down space for panning makes me able to paint in fullscreen much easier. Since i always use keyboard shortcuts for all the tools and use a seperate layer with colour blobs as my palette.
BUT, on the other hand it felt like Adobe robbed me of 509 of my 512 pressure levels (I use graphire). So I really hope that this is fixed until the final. Then I'll go over to 6.0 instantly.

I got 6 working today and after learning the shift-R click I'd have to say I like it.
I think that the past has shown that programs and companies that try to please everyone with their "does it all" program have faild badly.
You can see that they have really cramed a lot of stuff in there, which is cool but with web and print etc becomeing more complex every day I'm not sure how much more one app can handle. With the new brush system I've found that I have more space which is funny becasue there are a lot more features now.
I think that Adobe have done a prety good job at compleating what would have been a hard design breif. However it is the actuial future of the product and the design in itself which I think is wrong.
It runs like shit on my overloaded set up as well, significantly worse than 5.5.
On my girlfriend's "game banned" athlon 700 it's pretty nice tho.
The brush action/pressure sensitivity does seem better as I think has been mentiond before.
people seem to be saying that the earlier versions are different, so what? 5.5 doesn't exist anymore. if you buy photoshop you don't get a choice as far as I know.
I think I'll stick with 5.5 until I can get all the crap off my comp.

I got ps6.0 today. And I'm afraid that I must say that they haven't fixed the pressure sensitivity issue yet.
It's like it "snaps" to the darkest level when it in fact shouldn't be as dark. It's like when you get to close to a guide line with a selection. You get to a ceartain point then it jumps to align to the guide line (if you have snap to guide checked). Just the same with ps6.0 when you use pressure stylus.
The steps seems more defined now aswell. It's not as easy to paint smooth (i.e from darkest black to wihtest white without seeing the steps in the grayscale between them) as before.
Is there anyone else who experienced this??
Or is it just my Graphire/Driver ver???

I use 5.5, suits me fine, until something better comes along. Sometimes I use Discreet Logic's PAINT.
I miss the "scratch" window that was present in 3.05.

yea i'm having bad problems with the pressure as well.. grr.
i don't think it's a problem of not 'snapping', i think it just randomly jumps to 100% however lightly you try to use it.
5.5 did the same (for me) but a lot less often, and mostly when swapping or under heavy load. 6 seems to do it all the time.
*SIGH*

hmm, I just got 6 and although the brush menu is pretty stupid, I can live with it. I love 6 and dont think Ill ever start 5.5 up again for a long long time.
I have noticed the custom brushes respond WAY better than in 5.5, atleast on my copmuter.
It finally has size stylus option for Airbrush also.
Its heavy on ram though. |

yep, i get the same problem. i find that if i do 2 quick brush strokes, the second stroke comes out really dark.
im using the graphire, with the 4.55-R2 drivers in win2k. however, i just realised that 4.55-r3 drivers are up on the wacom site. i will try those out later and see how it goes.. |

I think that's a load of ********.
How would you know it's crap when you only have tried it for 5 min?
I'v had it for a few weeks myself and i like it so far.
But i guess it depends on what sort of work you do.
