Here's something that might interest a few board members;
http://users.bigpond.net.au/sumaleth/TheArena/TheArena.htm
It's a 28000 word novella based on the game Quake 3 Arena which I wrote for a competition last year.
It actually won and I'm now the proud owner of a custom made Doom vs Quake chess set. It's pretty awesome.
There are some pictures in there although not many. I spent 2 months writing the story but only a weekend on the pics.
Just ignore all the spelling mistakes..

May as well put up one of the images for a bit of visual interest.
The gun was snapped out of a model viewer but the character is fully hand painted.
And if you'd prefer to read the story locally you can get the whole thing in a zip;

cool story.
I guess the lack of replies is just an indicator for internet reading lazyness
Your story made me download Q3demo once again and, once again I realized after a short time that its still a pretty pointless game-
even though you worked hard to give it a meaning in your story..
any more written stuff from you somewhere? |

I'll get some pics of the chess set eventually. Just need to borough a digital camera off a friend.

While I'm here I may as well put the other images up. All of the presentation and images for the story was done in a major rush over a single weekend so they're not quite what I originally had in mind.. Good enough though.
Jack, aka the Quake guy. I like how this one came up. (anyone able to work out why his name is Jack?)
Q3A's double barrel shotgun. This was the first one I did and I'm not too happy with it. Bit of a mess really.
Doom Guy (or just Guy in the story) battling it out with a disabled Tank in thick, red fog. Not so keen on the background but I really like how the character turned out (ok, the body form is a little awkward but I mean the rendering).
Sarge. Quite like his face and his upper body id decent, but I had troubles with the lower stuff. So I made it really dark.

Sumaleth,
Neat story (I'm reading it at work, so of course it's got to be better than...work!).
Good pictures as well. I especially like the dark, moody Sarge.
Congrats! A well deserved award!

Really like your rendition of Sarge. Very neat. =) (I really like Q3A [even though I suck at it], the characters and such... they should develop their characters further, develop their stories, identities, ... I guess more like a Mortal Kombat type thing... just can't wait for Doom3) (sigh) |

very nice stuff you did here Rowan,
one thing is bothering me however: who made the chess set ? Katherine Anna Kang herself? |
