Sounds like your just talking about practice inwhich case it's not only acceptible it's expected as just part of the learning process. Just don't put it in your portfolio.

Yeah, white gouache and brush is the most common way to go. I wouldn't advise jel pens as they don't seem to work consitantly nor can you vary the look of your mark too well.
