that backlighting totally takes away the edge of the piece.

make only your sketch layer visible.
open the channels tab. (probably next to layers)
click the left-most button on the bottom that looks like a dot outlined circle.
this selects all the whitespace ...

the one on the right seems much taller than the others, because your perspective is off. he is meeting the horizon about at his shoulder, whereas everyone else is meeting it justabout at their waist. ...
