Both Netscape and IE support PNG, but both have issues. They only support 1-bit transparency (ie, you can have fully-transparent or fully-opaque, but nothing inbetween).

One place to look for reference material of real-life people (as opposed to fashion magazine people) is National Geographic magazine. These books are a goldmine of images. Just go down to your library ...
